To fix slow upload speed, first compare repeat tests on Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then pause other network activity. If Ethernet is much faster, troubleshoot Wi-Fi; if uploads remain slow on multiple wired devices, check your equipment and ask your internet provider about service problems and your plan’s upload capacity. A router or cable upgrade cannot increase the upload bandwidth your provider supplies.
Why is my upload speed so slow?
Upload speed is how quickly your connection sends data to a server. It affects activities such as video and voice calls, online gaming, uploading large files, and backing up photos. Whether a speed is “slow” depends on what you do online and what your internet plan provides; there is no single threshold that suits everyone.
Slow results can come from Wi-Fi signal conditions, other devices using bandwidth, local equipment, congestion, or the internet service and plan itself. A speed test measures performance at a particular moment, not a permanent property of your connection. Results can vary with the time of day, test server, device, and whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Ofcom cautions that a slow Wi-Fi test does not always mean there is a fault with the broadband line (Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance).
How do I check what is limiting my upload speed?
1. Establish a repeatable baseline
Run several tests at different times, using the same device and test service when practical. Record the upload and download results, time, connection type, and latency if the checker provides it. Ofcom advises testing more than once and trying more than one checker; Google also notes that server location and congestion can affect results (Google’s internet speed and connection guidance).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Pause competing network activity
Temporarily pause cloud backups, large uploads or downloads, streaming, and other heavy internet use. Disconnect idle devices if practical, then test again. Devices share available bandwidth, so this comparison can reveal contention, but pausing activity is a diagnostic step—not a guaranteed lasting fix.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you can, connect a computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test under similar conditions. Ethernet removes Wi-Fi signal strength and radio interference as variables and is usually faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. A cable is useful for diagnosis; it does not increase the upload capacity of your internet plan.

- Move close to the router and test with a clear path between the device and router.
- Place the router in an open, elevated, roughly central location. Thick walls and nearby devices can obstruct or interfere with Wi-Fi.
- Check whether the device supports the faster Wi-Fi standards available from your router; a device’s capabilities can limit its result.
- Restart the router and the device, then test again. Temporarily disconnect unused devices to see whether they are contributing to congestion.
- If performance varies by location, compare tests in different rooms. Nearby wireless networks and household devices can affect performance.
Router settings such as channel selection or Quality of Service (QoS) vary by model. Treat them as model-specific troubleshooting, not universal speed fixes; avoid changing unfamiliar settings without the router maker’s instructions.
Why is my upload speed slow but download is fast?
Upload and download performance are different measures, and a strong download result does not establish that the upload path is equally fast. Wi-Fi conditions, competing traffic, equipment, congestion, and the upload capacity of your plan can affect the two directions differently. Compare repeated upload results over Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then use the comparison to locate the likely bottleneck rather than assuming the broadband line is faulty.

What if upload speed is still slow over Ethernet?
First restart the modem and router according to your provider’s or manufacturer’s instructions. Check that Ethernet cables are connected securely and that the router ports, switches, and other network components support the speed you expect; the slowest component can constrain the connection. Do not bypass provider equipment or alter settings you do not understand as a first step.
If several devices continue to show low upload results over Ethernet, contact your internet provider. Give them the repeated measurements, times, devices, and connection type, and ask whether there is an outage or line/service issue and what upload capacity your plan provides. A persistent low wired result is stronger evidence to investigate the service or plan than a Wi-Fi-only test, though it does not by itself identify the cause.

In the United States, you can use the FCC National Broadband Map to review ISP-reported advertised speeds and availability at an address. Those listings are not a guarantee of measured performance at your home. Ofcom’s guidance applies to UK consumers; the FCC map is a US resource.
When should I replace equipment or change plans?
Consider equipment only when tests point to it
If Ethernet is consistently much faster than Wi-Fi and placement and interference checks do not help, the router or wireless capabilities may be limiting the connection. Before replacing a router, check its compatibility with your provider’s modem or service, the Ethernet port speed, coverage needs, and the devices that will use it. A new router is not a remedy for upload capacity missing from the broadband service.
Consider a service change when the wired result falls short
Compare plans by advertised upload capacity, price, contract terms, and availability at your address, then check whether the proposed capacity meets your needs. Provider availability and advertised speeds are location-specific. If the wired baseline is consistently below what you need, ask your provider what service options are available; changing a cable or router cannot raise the provider-supplied limit.
