Those sources can answer different questions, and updates may not appear on every screen at the same moment. Check the flight’s correct date and number on United, use the FAA for airport-wide context, and ask United staff at the gate if the live displays still conflict.
Why United’s status and the airport board can disagree
They may be reporting different things
United’s official flight-status tool lets travelers search by route or flight number and select a date, so it is intended to show an individual flight’s status. An airport board shows flight information displayed at the terminal. The FAA’s airport-status information, by contrast, concerns general airport conditions rather than one particular flight. The FAA states on its Washington Dulles status page: “The status information provided on this site indicates general airport conditions; it is not flight-specific.”
A broad airport delay or traffic condition may affect many flights, but it does not by itself establish the status of your United flight. The FAA advises travelers to check their airline to determine whether an airport condition affects their flight.
Updates may take time to reach displays
For flights scheduled to depart within seven days, the U.S. Department of Transportation says airlines must provide a status update within 30 minutes of becoming aware of a change. It also requires airlines to update flight displays and other flight-information sources at U.S. airports under the airline’s control within 30 minutes of becoming aware of the problem. That is a maximum timing rule for covered updates—not a promise that every screen changes simultaneously. It also does not mean every airport display is under United’s control.

Early delay estimates can change, too. DOT notes that a delay may grow unexpectedly—a “creeping delay”—when new conditions emerge. A later estimate may therefore differ from the first one even when the information is being updated.
Which source should you trust for your flight?
| Source | Best use | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| United flight-status page | Look up an individual flight by route or flight number and date. | It does not explain a discrepancy on its own; confirm that the date and flight number match your itinerary. |
| Airport board | See the flight information currently displayed to passengers at the terminal. | The reviewed official sources do not establish the data feed or refresh timing for every airport’s board. DOT’s 30-minute rule applies to qualifying U.S. flights and airport sources under the airline’s control. |
| FAA airport-status information | Check general airport conditions and delays that may affect traffic. | It is not a flight-specific status source; check the airline to determine how an airport condition affects your flight. |
United’s flight-status page requires JavaScript for interactive details. No particular flight’s live status is established here.

What to do when the information conflicts
- Verify the lookup. On United’s flight-status page, check the correct travel date and flight number—or the matching route—against your itinerary.
- Use the FAA for context, not a verdict. Check the FAA airport-status page to see whether broader conditions are affecting the airport. It does not replace the airline’s flight-specific status.
- Ask United staff at the gate if the conflict remains. For a live disagreement, ask about your specific flight and follow current instructions from airline staff.
A discrepancy by itself does not reveal its cause. Without the flight number, airport, and observations made at the time, it is not possible to determine whether the difference reflects timing, scope, or another circumstance.
