A 24-hour wait is not a universal hold on Steam refunds. The timing depends on where the refund is going and, in some cases, whether Steam cancels the original transaction rather than issuing a separate credit. Steam says Wallet credit may take 24–48 hours, while an approved refund may take up to seven days to appear. If the refund was approved within 24 hours of purchase, your bank may show the original charge as pending until it removes it.
Why is my Steam refund taking 24 hours?
Steam describes two different situations that can involve a 24-hour period:

- Refund to Steam Wallet: Wallet credit may appear within 24–48 hours. Steam also says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear.
- Refund approved within 24 hours of purchase: Steam says it cancels the original transaction. That can look like a pending charge that has not yet disappeared, rather than a separate refund credit.
These timings come from Steam’s Common Refund Questions. They do not mean every Steam refund is held for exactly 24 hours.
Where is my refund?
First check whether Steam has approved and processed the request. Submission, approval, Steam processing, and posting or reversal by your payment provider are separate steps. Steam says it sends a confirmation email after you submit a request and another email when the refund is processed. Check Steam purchase history and your Wallet balance for a Wallet refund; for an original-payment refund, check the card, bank, or provider account for a credit or for the original pending charge to disappear.

If approval came within 24 hours of purchase, the bank may take up to 30 days to confirm that Steam did not receive the funds. After confirmation, the bank removes the pending charge. In that case, there may be no separate refund entry. Steam says international payment refunds can take longer, and the exact timing for a particular bank, country, card, or payment provider is not established by its general guidance.
My refund was approved—when will I get my money?
Steam’s FAQ says an approved refund may take up to seven days to appear. Wallet credit may arrive within 24–48 hours, but a refund to the original payment method follows that provider’s processing and may take longer for international payments.

Steam’s request form offers Steam Wallet or the original payment method when those options are available; you may not be able to choose either destination for every purchase. If an approved refund has not appeared after seven days, Steam advises contacting your bank about pending refunds. For a cancellation of the original transaction, the bank’s confirmation and removal of the pending charge can take up to 30 days.
How to submit a Steam refund request
- Sign in to Steam Help.
- Open Purchases and select the purchase you want reviewed.
- Choose the issue that best describes the problem, then select the refund request option.
- Complete and submit the form. Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method if that choice is offered.
- Watch for Steam’s confirmation email and, later, its email confirming that the refund was processed.
Does my purchase qualify for a refund?
For a standard game title, Valve’s general policy is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. These eligibility rules are separate from the time it takes money to arrive after approval. Steam says customers outside the usual rules can still submit a request for review; it does not promise approval in those cases.

Pre-orders
A pre-order may be refunded before release. After release, the ordinary 14-day and under-two-hour criteria apply. For a pre-order purchased more than six months earlier, Steam says a refund to the original payment method may not be available, though Steam Wallet credit may remain an option. Steam Wallet funds
Refunding unused funds purchased for the Steam Wallet is a different process from receiving a game refund into the Wallet. Steam’s Wallet FAQ says unused Wallet funds purchased on Steam may be refundable within 14 days. See Steam Wallet Refunds for that separate policy.

Steam presents its voluntary worldwide refund policy separately from statutory withdrawal information for EU and UK customers.
