If your portable air conditioner runs but the room stays warm, start with its mode, temperature setting, and warning lights. Then check airflow, the exhaust hose and window seal, room conditions, and drainage—in that order. These checks address common causes without opening the unit; exact controls and procedures vary by model, so use its manual for specifics.
Why is my portable AC not cooling?
A portable AC may run without cooling if it is not set to Cool, its target temperature is not below the room temperature, or a timer, full-water indicator, or error condition is interrupting operation. Restricted airflow, a poorly installed exhaust hose, heat entering the room, or a capacity mismatch can also leave a room warm. If cooling stops and starts, check the settings and indicators before assuming the unit has failed.
1. Check the mode, temperature, and indicators
- Set the unit to Cool, not Fan or another mode.
- Set the target below the current room temperature. If the room is already at or below the set point, the compressor may stop while the fan continues.
- Look for an active timer, a full-water or tank symbol, or an error message. Consult the manual for the meaning of any code or indicator.
- If the compressor keeps stopping, check the room temperature against the setting, tank indication, hose connection, and filter. De’Longhi includes these checks in its guidance for portable ACs whose compressor stops: De’Longhi troubleshooting.
Controls and indicator meanings differ among models. Do not treat a particular light or code as universal.
2. Restore airflow through the filter and vents
A dirty filter or blocked intake can reduce airflow and cooling. Turn the appliance off and follow its manual to access and clean the filter; follow the manual’s instructions on whether to unplug it first and how the filter should be washed or dried. - Check that the air intake and outlet are clear of furniture, dust, and debris.
- Clean only parts the manual identifies as user-serviceable. Do not force access panels or spray liquid into the unit.
- If the filter is damaged or cannot be cleaned, match a replacement to the exact model rather than choosing by appearance alone.
3. Inspect the exhaust hose and window kit
The hose carries heat out of the room. Confirm it is securely connected to both the AC and its window adapter, then check for kinks, crushing, blockage, or damage. Keep the hose as short and straight as practical, while staying within the limit specified for your model. Haier’s guidance says not to exceed five feet; that limit should not be applied to other models unless their own instructions say so.
Check the window insert for large gaps that let warm outside air back into the room. Refit the kit or seal a gap with a suitable weatherstripping product. Do not cover the AC’s intake or exhaust openings. Installation guidance from Honeywell and TCL support also emphasizes proper hose connection and airflow. If the hose is damaged, use a replacement compatible with the precise model.

4. Reduce the room’s heat load
A functioning unit can struggle if heat entering the room exceeds what it can remove. Close doors and windows, draw curtains or blinds against direct sunlight, and move nearby heat-producing appliances where practical. Compare the room’s area and conditions with the AC’s stated capacity.
Room area alone does not determine whether a unit is adequate. Honeywell’s general sizing guidance notes that windows, insulation, appliances, ceiling height, and occupancy can affect cooling needs. Treat sizing charts as guidance, not a guarantee. Haier notes that an oversized unit may shut off too early, while an undersized one may not cool adequately: Haier capacity guidance.

5. Drain condensate only as the manual directs
Drainage depends on the model: some portable ACs collect water in a tank, some use a drain hose, and some evaporate much of the condensate through the exhaust. A full-water indicator can stop operation, and humid conditions may still require draining. If the tank or full-water symbol appears, use the manual’s drain procedure and reconnect any drain plug or hose exactly as instructed. Do not assume that every model needs routine manual draining—or that none does.

If the unit still does not cool after these checks, consult its manual and contact the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified technician. Low refrigerant or an internal fault requires service, not an owner-level repair. Midea’s portable AC manual identifies low refrigerant as a possible cause and calls for technician inspection: Midea portable AC manual. Do not open a sealed refrigerant circuit or attempt to add refrigerant yourself.
