Outlook can look “small” for several different reasons: the message text may be zoomed out, the Inbox rows may use a small font, Windows may be using a low display scale, or browser zoom may be reduced if you use Outlook on the web. The correct fix depends on which part of Outlook is too small.
Use the section for your version of Outlook and the symptom you are seeing. Increasing the Reading Pane zoom, for example, will not enlarge the folder list or the ribbon.
First, identify what looks too small
| What is too small? | Most likely fix |
|---|---|
| Email body in the Reading Pane | Use Outlook’s message zoom or your browser’s zoom. |
| Sender, subject, or message-list rows | Change the message-list font or Windows text size. |
| Folder list, ribbon, buttons, and other apps | Increase Windows display scaling. |
| Text while writing an email | Change the composing font or use compose-window zoom. |
| Everything on a Mac | Adjust Outlook for Mac’s text-display-size slider. |
New Outlook and classic Outlook for Windows have different menus. Outlook.com and Outlook on the web use the browser for reading zoom, while Outlook for Mac has its own font settings.

- Select View.
- Select View settings.
- Choose Mail, then Layout.
- Under Text size and spacing, choose Small, Medium, or Large.
- Select Save.
This is the setting to use for Inbox rows. It is different from zooming the email body.
Enlarge the email currently open
- Select an email so it appears in the Reading Pane.
- Open View.
- Select Zoom.
- Use + or – to choose a size between 50% and 200%.
- Select Reset if you want to return to the default.
If Zoom is unavailable, select a message in the Reading Pane first. This change applies only to the email currently displayed. When you select another message, its body text returns to its default size.
Change the default size for messages you write
To make your new emails, replies, and forwards easier to read while composing:
- Select View → View settings.
- Select Mail → Compose and reply.
- Under Message format, choose the font, size, and style.
- Select Save.
This controls messages you compose. It does not reliably enlarge every incoming email, because received HTML messages can contain their own font and size instructions.
Make text larger in classic Outlook for Windows
Classic Outlook normally has a File menu and a desktop-style ribbon. It provides separate controls for Inbox headings, subject lines, previews, and the Reading Pane.
Increase the Inbox column headings
To enlarge labels such as From, Subject, and Received:
- Open Mail.
- Select View → View Settings.
- Select Other Settings.
- Select Column Font.
- Choose a larger font and size, then confirm the dialogs.
Increase the subject-line size
- Go to View → View Settings → Other Settings.
- Select Row Font.
- Choose the font and size you want.
- Confirm the settings.
Row Font changes the message subject lines in the Inbox. It is not the same as Column Font, which changes the headings above the columns.
Increase message-preview text
If you use a preview under each message, change its font separately:

- Select View → View Settings → Other Settings.
- Under Message Preview, select Font.
- Choose a larger size and apply the change.
Alternatively, show more preview text rather than making the font larger. Select View → Message Preview, then choose 1 Line, 2 Lines, or 3 Lines. The preview includes the sender and subject.
Zoom the Reading Pane
To enlarge the contents of the selected email:
- Select a message and click inside the Reading Pane.
- Use the zoom control at the bottom-right of the Outlook window.
- Click the displayed percentage if you want to select an exact percentage.
- Select Remember my preference, if that option is available, and select OK.
A quick alternative is to hold Ctrl while rolling the mouse wheel. Roll the wheel away from you to enlarge the message and toward you to reduce it.
Reading Pane zoom affects the current item, not the entire Outlook interface. In classic Outlook, selecting another message or folder normally returns the Reading Pane to 100%. For Microsoft 365 subscribers, the remembered preference can persist across messages when supported. Without a Microsoft 365 subscription, it returns to 100% when another message is selected.
Change the font for new messages and replies
For the default font used when composing in classic Outlook, select File → Options → Mail. Use the available font settings for new messages, replies, and forwards.
This setting is for writing email. It does not automatically override the formatting of every incoming HTML message.
Increase the size of the entire Outlook window in Windows
Use Windows settings when the folder pane, ribbon, buttons, and other applications are also too small.
Enlarge only text
In Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Accessibility → Text size.
- Move the Text size slider to the right.
- Apply the change.
In Windows 10, the path is Start → Settings → Ease of Access → Display, then adjust Make text bigger.
Text size enlarges text without scaling images and other interface elements.

Enlarge the whole display
- Open Start → Settings → System → Display.
- Under Scale, select a larger value.
Display scaling enlarges the overall interface, including apps and images. It is broader than the Windows Text size option, so use it when Outlook’s buttons and controls—not just its words—are too small.
Use Magnifier for a temporary enlargement
- Windows + +: turn Magnifier on and zoom in.
- Windows + –: zoom out.
- Windows + Esc: turn Magnifier off.
Fix Outlook scaling on a multi-monitor setup
If Outlook looks too large on one monitor and too small on another, check Microsoft 365’s display-scaling preference:
- In Outlook, select File → Options → General.
- Under User Interface options, review the scaling setting.
- Choose Optimize for best appearance for the recommended dynamic behavior.
- Choose Optimize for compatibility if controls or text appear incorrectly sized.
- Restart Outlook after selecting compatibility mode.
Optimize for best appearance dynamically adjusts as Outlook moves between displays. Optimize for compatibility disables dynamic scaling for the current application and requires an Outlook restart.
Make Outlook.com or Outlook on the web larger
Enlarge a received email
Outlook.com does not provide the same Reading Pane zoom slider found in classic Outlook for Windows. Use your browser’s zoom control instead. In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more → Zoom, then increase the percentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBrowser zoom changes the web page, including Outlook’s surrounding interface. It is not the same as desktop Outlook’s message-only zoom.
Enlarge text while composing
- Create or reply to a message.
- In the compose pane, select Change the size of your text.
- Choose the font size you want.
If only one web email is difficult to read, browser zoom is usually the quickest fix. If the whole page is too small, browser zoom also enlarges menus and controls.

While composing, place the cursor in the message body and select Format → Zoom. Choose or enter a percentage. After sending, the default size is reinstated.
Incoming HTML messages can specify their own fonts and sizes, so Outlook for Mac’s font settings may not change how every received message renders. Microsoft’s current documentation says support for legacy Outlook for Mac ends in October 2026; the exact support available depends on your Microsoft 365, Office, or Outlook license.
Common mistakes when fixing small Outlook text
- Using Reading Pane zoom to enlarge everything: it changes email content in the Reading Pane, not the folder list, ribbon, navigation bar, or message-list rows.
- Expecting zoom to stay permanent: new Outlook applies message zoom only to the displayed email, while classic Outlook can return to 100% when you select another message.
- Changing the composing font to fix received mail: default composing settings do not necessarily override fonts embedded in incoming HTML messages.
- Confusing Text size with Scale: Windows Text size enlarges text only. Display Scale enlarges the overall display, including images and apps.
- Following desktop instructions in Outlook.com: the classic Outlook bottom-right Reading Pane slider is not the documented zoom method for Outlook.com; use browser zoom instead.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Decide whether the problem affects the email body, message list, or the complete Outlook interface.
- For one email body, use message zoom in new or classic Outlook.
- For Inbox senders and subjects, change the message-list, row, or column font.
- For Outlook and other applications, adjust Windows Text size or Display Scale.
- For Outlook.com, increase browser zoom.
- For a Mac, adjust Outlook → Settings → Fonts.
- If sizing changes between monitors, review Outlook’s User Interface options and restart the app if compatibility mode is selected.
FAQ
Why is only the email body small in Outlook?
The Reading Pane is probably using a low zoom percentage. In new Outlook, select the message and choose View → Zoom. In classic Outlook, use the zoom control at the bottom-right, or hold Ctrl and roll the mouse wheel while the pointer is inside the Reading Pane.
Why does Outlook zoom reset when I open another email?
Message zoom is not a universal Outlook display setting. New Outlook applies it only to the currently displayed email. Classic Outlook normally returns to 100% when you select another message unless a supported Remember my preference option is enabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I make the Outlook Inbox rows larger?
In new Outlook, use View → View settings → Mail → Layout → Text size and spacing, then choose Medium or Large. In classic Outlook, use View → View Settings → Other Settings → Row Font for subject lines and Column Font for headings such as From and Subject.
How do I make the entire Outlook interface larger?
In Windows, open Start → Settings → System → Display and select a larger value under Scale. Use Windows Accessibility → Text size instead if you want to enlarge text without scaling images and other interface elements.
Does changing Outlook’s default font enlarge received emails?
No. The default font setting is intended for messages you compose, including new messages, replies, and forwards. Incoming HTML messages can contain their own formatting and may continue to display at their original size.
How do I zoom in on Outlook.com?
Use your web browser’s zoom control. In Microsoft Edge, select Settings and more → Zoom. Outlook.com does not use the classic desktop Outlook Reading Pane zoom slider for reading messages.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the small area: use message zoom for an email body, view or font settings for Inbox rows, Windows Scale for the whole desktop, and browser zoom for Outlook.com. On Mac, Outlook’s Settings → Fonts slider is the broadest control.
