If the noise continues during light use, check airflow and CPU activity, then follow the manufacturer’s model-specific diagnostics. Persistent abnormal noise, overheating, or shutdowns may point to a cooling fault.
What the whirring sound can mean
Fans commonly speed up during demanding tasks such as gaming, video compression, software updates, or file indexing. If the sound rises with the workload and quiets afterward, that is consistent with normal cooling. Apple describes workload-related rushing air as part of the cooling process; it does not mean grinding, rattling, or every persistent fan sound is normal. Apple’s fan guidance explains when Mac fans may run faster.
A fan that stays loud while you are doing little may be responding to restricted airflow, a background process, a software or configuration issue, or a hardware problem. The sound alone cannot identify which one. Dell’s guidance summarizes common causes as “overheating, high processor usage, or dust blocking airflow.” Dell’s fan troubleshooting guide is model-dependent.
Use the noise pattern to choose your next step

These are triage clues, not a remote diagnosis. Vent locations, fan layout, safe cleaning methods, diagnostics, and repair parts vary by make and model.

Work through these checks in order
1. Check whether a task is driving the fan
Think about what changed just before the noise began: gaming, exporting video, installing updates, or indexing files can all increase the cooling demand. Close work you no longer need. If the fan settles after the demanding task ends, that pattern is consistent with normal active cooling. Warmth by itself does not prove the laptop is failing.
2. Give the vents room to move air
Place the laptop on a hard, flat desk or table. Remove bedding, cushions, clothing, papers, and other objects that cover vents, and keep the device away from unusually warm surroundings. Apple recommends a stable, ventilated surface for Mac laptops and gives an ambient operating range of 10–35°C (50–95°F); that range is Apple-specific and should not be assumed for other laptops. 3. Look for a process keeping the computer busy
On a Mac, open Activity Monitor and look for a process using substantial CPU when the computer is otherwise idle. Apple recommends checking CPU activity when a Mac runs warm or its fans run for a long time, and cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose hardware. On a Dell Windows PC, follow the support procedure for the exact model. If one app repeatedly drives activity, investigate that app or its updates rather than trying to mask the heat with an accessory.
4. Clean only the external vents, carefully
If dust is visible around external vents, shut down the laptop and disconnect power first. Dell recommends using short bursts of compressed air according to the can’s directions. Do not blow into vents with your mouth; moisture can damage components. Check the model documentation before any internal cleaning, and do not open the chassis just because the fan is loud. For a laptop still under warranty, Dell advises contacting an authorized provider before internal work. Dell’s cleaning guidance covers precautions.

5. Apply only the software steps available for your model
Dell’s support sequence can include checking vents, power settings, drivers and BIOS, Windows updates, available thermal-profile settings, and SupportAssist fan diagnostics. The tools and menu names vary by product; use the support page for your exact Dell model rather than applying settings from another computer.
For a Mac, check CPU activity and install applicable software updates. If unexpected fan use persists despite light workload and good ventilation, Apple’s steps differ by architecture: Apple silicon users can close and reopen the lid or restart, while Intel-based Mac users may need the SMC reset procedure for their particular model. Mac power modes also depend on model and macOS version. Apple says Low Power Mode can reduce fan noise on certain Macs with active cooling running macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later; High Power Mode can make fans run faster during intensive work. Apple’s power-mode guidance describes availability and behavior.

When to get the laptop checked
Run the diagnostic procedure for your exact model and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if a test fails, a fan does not spin or behaves irregularly, or the noise remains abnormally loud at idle. Also seek support if the laptop continues to overheat, slow down, or shut down unexpectedly. A burning smell or swollen or deformed chassis is a stop-using-it warning, not a symptom to troubleshoot by continuing to run the computer. Dell identifies these as reasons to stop using the device.
A stand can help keep a laptop elevated on a hard surface, and Dell also mentions cooling pads as an airflow option. Neither guarantees a fix or replaces diagnostics when symptoms persist. Do not treat an accessory as a substitute for service when the fan or cooling system may be failing.
