First, identify which keyboard is missing: a phone’s on-screen keyboard, Windows’ touch keyboard or On-Screen Keyboard, a third-party keyboard app, or a physical keyboard. Then tap directly inside an editable text field and check whether the problem affects one app or every app. Those checks distinguish a focus or settings issue from a connection problem.
Start with these quick checks
- Tap inside the text field. A keyboard usually appears only when an app has focus in a place where you can type. A button, label, or display-only field will not open it.
- Try another app. If the keyboard is missing in just one app, test a different editable field elsewhere. An app may restrict third-party keyboards, or the original field may not accept text.
- Check what kind of keyboard you mean. If you need to type without a working physical keyboard, use the device’s built-in on-screen option. If a physical keyboard is unresponsive, follow the hardware checks below.
On Android, keyboard visibility follows focus: Android’s documentation explains that moving focus into or out of an editable field causes the system to show or hide the input method as appropriate. Timing during app startup and input configuration can also affect whether it appears.
Fix a missing keyboard on Android
Choose an enabled keyboard
- Tap an editable text field.
- Open the keyboard picker if it appears, and select the keyboard you want to use.
- Check that the keyboard is enabled in your device’s on-screen keyboard settings. On many devices, the path is Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard; labels and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version.
If Gboard disappeared
Google notes that an update can cause Gboard to disappear from the keyboard list. In Google’s Gboard troubleshooting steps, the recovery options include selecting Gboard again, making sure it is enabled, restarting the device, and clearing the app’s cache. Try the simpler checks and restart first; clearing Gboard’s storage or data resets the app, so use that only if you are prepared to set it up again.
If it still does not appear
Test a text field in another app and restart the device. If the issue occurs only in one app, consider that app’s field or keyboard support rather than assuming the Android keyboard itself has failed. If it occurs everywhere, confirm that at least one on-screen keyboard is enabled and selected.

Fix a missing keyboard on iPhone
Tap directly inside a field that accepts text. To review keyboard configuration, open Settings > General > Keyboard, as described in Apple’s iPhone keyboard guide.
If a third-party keyboard is missing in only one app, try the default Apple keyboard there. Some apps allow only the default keyboard; Microsoft’s SwiftKey guidance documents this limitation. A keyboard that works in other apps is not necessarily broken.

Make the Windows touch keyboard appear
Windows has two distinct built-in options: the touch-keyboard button for touchscreen typing and the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK), an accessibility tool. The touch-keyboard icon’s visibility is separate from whether Windows opens the keyboard automatically.
Show the touch-keyboard icon
Open taskbar settings and find the touch-keyboard icon preference. Choose Always to keep its button visible, or When no keyboard attached to show it conditionally. The exact path and labels vary by Windows version; see Microsoft’s touch-keyboard instructions.

Adjust automatic display
If the icon is available but the keyboard does not open when expected, check the separate Windows setting for showing the touch keyboard when no keyboard is attached and the device is not in tablet mode. Its location and wording can differ by version. This automatic-display behavior is not the same as keeping the taskbar icon visible.
Open the On-Screen Keyboard
For an alternative that does not depend on the touch-keyboard button, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on On-Screen Keyboard. Microsoft describes this separate option in its OSK guide.

- Reconnect it. Unplug and reseat a wired keyboard, or remove and reconnect a wireless receiver.
- Try another port. Connect directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Check power and pairing. Replace or recharge batteries, confirm the wireless keyboard is paired, and use its reset or reconnect procedure if needed.
- Test it on another PC. Install any required driver and see whether it works there. Microsoft recommends these checks in its Windows mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
If it fails on another PC too, hardware failure is more likely and replacement may be needed. If it works elsewhere, investigate the original computer’s port, connection, or driver before replacing the keyboard.
