Always-On display can contribute to battery use because it keeps a dimmed Lock Screen visible while a supported iPhone is locked. Apple does not publish a specific battery penalty for the feature, so the size of its effect depends on your iPhone and how you use it. Check Battery settings for other causes, then compare similar days with Always-On display on and off.
Does Always-On display drain battery?
It can use power to keep glanceable information visible, including the time, date, notifications, and widgets. But Apple’s guide does not quantify how much extra battery Always-On display uses, so there is no reliable percentage or number of hours to apply to every iPhone.
On supported models, Always-On display is on by default. It automatically turns off when the phone is face down or obstructed, away from a paired Apple Watch, in a CarPlay session, using Continuity Camera, in Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus, or at your usual bedtime. How can I check what is using my iPhone battery?
Before blaming the display, review your iPhone’s battery activity. Apple’s Battery screens can show suggestions or insights, daily battery use, and app activity; exact labels and views may vary by iOS version.

- Review any battery suggestions or insights shown at the top.
- Inspect daily battery use and app activity to see whether an app or recent activity stands out.
Use Apple’s guide to checking iPhone battery usage if you need help interpreting the screen. Apple also notes that battery life depends on factors such as how you use the device and which apps you use.
How do I tell whether Always-On display is the cause?
Try a simple comparison rather than assuming the display is responsible. Turn it off for a few days and note your daily battery use, then—if useful—turn it back on and compare with days when your routine is similar. This is a practical troubleshooting check, not a controlled test; changes in screen time, apps, signal, and other activity can affect the result.

How do I turn off Always-On display or reduce what it shows?
To disable it, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display and switch the feature off. If you want the clock and other glanceable information to remain visible, leave the feature on and switch off Show Wallpaper, Show Notifications, or both on the same settings page. These options change what appears on the Lock Screen; Apple does not state a specific battery saving for either option.
What else can make an iPhone battery drain faster?
Brightness and Auto-Lock
High brightness uses more energy. Apple recommends enabling Auto-Brightness and also points users to Auto-Lock settings when investigating battery drain. Review the display settings if the screen is often bright or stays on longer than needed. See Apple’s battery performance guidance.

Recent setup or software update
After setting up an iPhone or installing an update, background work can temporarily affect battery life. Apple advises waiting a few days after an update before reassessing, rather than treating short-lived drain as a persistent problem. Its battery-drain troubleshooting guide covers this and other checks.
Weak cellular signal
Weak coverage can contribute to battery use. When reliable Wi-Fi is available, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less power than cellular networking.

Can Low Power Mode help?
Low Power Mode reduces power use and turns off Always-On display. To enable it, open Settings > Battery and turn on Low Power Mode. The available power-mode settings can vary by iPhone model and iOS version. Apple’s pages on Low Power Mode and iPhone Power Modes describe the options.
Adaptive Power is available only on listed supported iPhone models and software. Where available, it may adjust brightness, background activity, and performance to help extend battery life; it is not the same setting as Always-On display.

When should I check battery health?
If the drain continues after reviewing usage and settings, open Settings > Battery and look for Battery Health or the equivalent label for your iPhone generation. If the screen shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement or follow the instructions shown on your device. That indication is a reason to investigate service, not to assume a display setting is the only issue.
