“Why is my Facebook post grayed out?” depends on what looks gray: the Post button while you’re composing, an option in the composer, or a post that has already been published. Those are different situations, and Facebook’s help pages do not identify one universal cause or guaranteed fix. First note where the issue occurs and when it appears, then check the audience or Page access that applies to that destination.
First identify what is grayed out
Before changing settings, distinguish the control from the content. A disabled Post button before sharing is not the same as a gray audience or composer option, and neither necessarily means a published post is unavailable. Record whether you are posting to a profile, Page, or group, whether the issue happens before or after selecting Post, and whether it occurs in one app or browser or across more than one access method. These details help describe the problem; they do not, by themselves, establish its cause.
If you’re composing a profile post
Facebook’s normal sharing flow is to start a post, add text or media, choose an audience, and select Post. Check the audience selector in the composer and review relevant privacy controls under Settings & privacy → Audience and visibility. Facebook notes that privacy settings and available choices can vary by profile type and region. This is a useful check, not proof that a privacy setting caused a disabled button.

If you’re posting as a Facebook Page
Confirm that you have selected the intended Page identity and that your account has the access needed for the action. Facebook explains that creating and managing Page content depends on a person’s access level; Page access and setup can affect which actions are available.
- Check that the composer is using the Page you mean to publish from, rather than your personal profile or another Page.
- Check your Page access and whether it permits content creation or management. Facebook’s explanations are in About Facebook Page access and Give, edit or remove Facebook Page access.
If the button stays gray or the post fails
Note the exact control that is disabled, the destination (profile, Page, or group), the device and app or browser, what you tried, and any error displayed. Then check Facebook’s available Help & support options to report the issue or find guidance relevant to your account.

Be careful about interpreting Support Inbox guidance: Facebook’s page about responses to reports concerns content that someone reported, not a universal appeal process for a posting restriction. See Why didn’t Facebook remove the content that I reported for that narrower situation.

A gray control alone does not establish that your account is restricted, that a privacy setting is responsible, or that an app reinstall or waiting period will fix it. Facebook’s published video and Reels playback troubleshooting advice includes checking connectivity, updating a browser, restarting a computer, and reporting a persistent playback problem, but that guidance is about playback—not a disabled Post button. Do not treat it as a confirmed fix for posting. The playback page is Unable to view or play videos and reels on Facebook.
