If your disk space is still full after deleting or moving files, first check which storage meter is full: your computer’s drive, a removable drive, or a cloud account. Deleted items may still be in a Recycle Bin, Trash, or Recently Deleted folder; a move to another folder on the same drive does not free that drive; and synced files can have separate local and cloud copies.

First, identify which storage is full

Look at the exact warning and note the drive or account it names. A nearly full C: drive is a local-storage problem; a full Microsoft, Google, or iCloud account is a cloud-quota problem. Moving a file off your computer may affect one meter without changing the other.

  • Windows or File Explorer warning: Check the named drive’s available capacity.
  • Cloud account warning: Check that service’s storage breakdown and Trash or recycle bin.
  • Phone or photo-app warning: Check whether the warning concerns device storage, cloud storage, or both.

Do not empty a bin or delete a backup until you have checked what it contains and confirmed you do not need those files.

Why deleting a file may not free space

The file is still in a bin

On many systems, deleting an item first moves it to a Recycle Bin, Trash, or Recently Deleted area. It may remain recoverable and continue to use storage until it is permanently removed. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says to empty the Recycle Bin to completely remove deleted files from the device and free space.

The cloud service has its own Trash

A cloud service’s Trash can count against the account quota even when it is unrelated to the computer’s local disk. For example, Google Drive says trashed files continue to count toward Google storage until permanently deleted. Google says Trash items are automatically deleted after 30 days, but emptying Trash sooner may be necessary if you need the quota back now. You can review the service’s Google Drive deletion guidance first. If you do not own a file in Drive, removing it from your view does not delete the owner’s copy.

A photo app may have a separate Recently Deleted area

Photo libraries can sync deletions across devices, and deleted items may remain recoverable for a period. Check the relevant account, device, and backup status before permanently emptying a photo app’s Trash or Recently Deleted folder.

Why moving a file may not free space

A move frees the source storage only when the destination is outside the storage being measured. Moving a file from one folder to another on the same drive does not reduce that drive’s used space. Moving it to another partition on the same physical disk may change a partition’s free-space figure, but it does not reduce total usage on that disk.

Moving a file to an external USB drive or SD card can free space on the PC if the file is actually moved off the internal drive. Microsoft lists external storage as an option for keeping infrequently used personal files without storing them on the computer. Confirm the copy is complete and opens from the new location before removing the original.

Check Windows storage and cleanup settings

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft recommends checking available capacity in File Explorer under This PC. For a breakdown and suggested cleanup items, open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review suggested temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps before choosing what to remove. Microsoft’s free-space guide explains these checks.

Storage Sense can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin, but its behavior depends on its settings. Microsoft says the defaults do not manage Downloads or cloud content unless configured. Storage Sense works on the system drive; use that drive’s storage settings for other drives. In Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft says inactive OneDrive files default to online-only after 30 days, while files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt from Storage Sense management. Check the current settings on your PC in Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide.

If the drive remains unexpectedly full after these checks, Microsoft notes that the Temp folder can fill quickly with Microsoft Store .appx files and describes Store cache and Windows Update troubleshooting steps in its Windows free-space guidance. This is one possible cause, not an explanation for every PC. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system folders manually.

Check OneDrive or Google Drive without confusing local and cloud space

OneDrive

OneDrive’s Files On-Demand feature can leave a file visible in the OneDrive folder while it is online-only and uses no local hard-drive space. That means the visible folder contents do not necessarily show how much local storage those files use. Check whether you are looking at PC capacity or Microsoft account quota, then review the file’s online-only or locally available state and the OneDrive recycle bin. Microsoft also says account storage availability may take a short delay to reflect deletion from OneDrive and its recycle bin. See Microsoft’s OneDrive deletion guidance.

Google Drive

Google Drive Trash affects Google storage quota until items are permanently deleted; that is distinct from the free space on your computer. If your warning is about the computer, check local drive capacity and any locally stored or synced copies. If it is about Google storage, review Trash and ownership before deleting items permanently. Google’s Drive help page describes these behaviors.

Check iCloud and photo storage carefully

iCloud Photos and iCloud backups

Apple says iCloud Photos keeps photos and videos up to date across devices signed in with the same Apple Account. Deleting an item on one device also deletes it on the others. Items in Recently Deleted are generally recoverable for 30 days; Apple notes an exception when iCloud storage is over its limit, where deleted photos and videos are removed immediately and cannot be recovered there.

iCloud backups are a separate storage category and can include a Photos Library when iCloud Photos is not in use. Check the storage breakdown before deleting a backup: Apple says deleting one also turns off iCloud Backup for that device. See Apple’s iCloud storage guidance.

Google Photos on Android

Google says deleting an item in the Photos app can delete the corresponding device item and, when it is backed up, copies on devices with backup enabled. Backed-up items and some unbacked items deleted from Android 11 or later can remain in Trash for 30 days. Deleted photos may also remain on a removable memory card. Verify the account, device, and backup state before emptying Trash; see Google’s photo and video deletion guidance.

A safe order for troubleshooting

  1. Identify the meter: Determine whether the warning names a local drive, removable drive, cloud account, or phone storage.
  2. Check the relevant storage breakdown: Use Windows Storage settings, the cloud provider’s account page, or the device’s storage settings to find the category using space.
  3. Inspect bins and Recently Deleted folders: Review their contents before permanently deleting anything.
  4. Check destinations and sync status: Confirm that moved files are on a different storage device if you expect local space to return, and check whether cloud files have local copies.
  5. Use built-in cleanup recommendations: Review proposed temporary-file, app, or large-file removals rather than deleting unknown system data.
  6. Confirm the result: Recheck the same drive or account meter after cleanup. A cloud account may take a short time to update after OneDrive deletion.

If those checks do not explain the usage, the next steps depend on the device, operating-system version, exact warning, and whether local capacity or cloud quota is full. Do not assume that instructions for Windows or a particular photo service apply to macOS, Linux, Android internal storage, or another provider.
