If a retro game’s picture rolls, shifts, or breaks into bars, start with the TV’s accessible hold control if it has one, then check the selected input and the external signal path. The right next step depends on whether the console is connected by composite AV, antenna/RF, or RGB/SCART—and whether the fault happens with every game or only one. Do not open the CRT cabinet: older CRTs can present high-voltage and implosion hazards, and an unspecified symptom does not identify a safe internal repair.
What kind of picture problem are you seeing?
First distinguish a rolling image from other kinds of distortion. The distinction helps you choose a sensible external check; it does not, by itself, prove which component has failed.
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| The whole picture scrolls up or down, or will not hold still | If available, gently adjust the TV’s external vertical hold control. Then confirm the selected input and connection path. |
| The picture shifts sideways, tears, or shows bars or lines | If available, check the external horizontal hold control as well as the cable and input. Nintendo’s N64 guidance groups rolling and bars or lines with hold adjustment. |
| The picture is fuzzy, snowy, or monochrome | Check whether you are using RF, whether the connections are secure, and whether the console, modulator, and TV settings match. These symptoms can have different causes from a rolling image. |
| Only colors are blotchy or discolored in patches | Treat this as a color-distortion issue, not a rolling-picture issue. Degaussing may be relevant to magnetic color distortion, but it is not a fix for continuous scrolling. |
| Only one game or video mode makes the image roll | Check the game’s video region and any console or cartridge regional setting before replacing a cable. |
Note whether the problem occurs on every game, every console, or just one combination. Record the console model and region, TV model and region, connection type, and any equipment between them, such as a switch, converter, or VCR. This gives a repair specialist useful context if external checks do not solve it.

- Check the TV’s accessible controls. If the TV has an external vertical or horizontal hold control, adjust it gently until the picture steadies. Nintendo’s original N64 booklet says to adjust the TV’s vertical or horizontal hold controls until the picture is steady; its NES instructions give the same first step. Not every TV has user-accessible hold controls. Consult the TV’s own instructions, and do not remove a panel to reach an internal adjustment.
- Confirm the selected input or RF channel. For a composite AV connection, select the corresponding video input on the TV. For an RF connection, tune to the channel used by that particular console and modulator. Do not assume that an RF channel number applies across all regions or equipment.
- Power down and check the connections. Turn off the console and TV before changing leads. Make sure the console’s output cable goes to a TV input—not a TV output—and that plugs are fully seated. Look for visible cable damage.
- Change one variable at a time. If available, try a known-good compatible cable, another TV input, or another known-good source. Note whether the symptom follows the cable, console, input, or game. A substitute that works is useful evidence about the external path; it does not prove that an untested part of the TV is fault-free.
- Follow the branch for your connection. Composite AV, RF, and RGB/SCART have different compatibility checks. Do not buy an adapter or cable until you know which connection the console and TV actually use.
- Stop if the fault remains after external checks. Compare with another known-good display or source if practical, then seek someone qualified to assess that particular CRT model. Do not attempt an internal adjustment or repair based on a general symptom guide.
What should you check on a composite AV connection?
With composite AV, confirm that the console’s AV lead is connected to the TV’s matching video and audio input jacks and that the TV is set to that input. If the existing cable appears suspect, compare it with a compatible replacement before concluding the TV is at fault.
Nintendo’s N64 booklet depicts its Stereo Audio/Video Cable running from the console’s MULTI OUT connector to the TV’s video and audio input jacks. That is a useful example of why the physical connection matters: a replacement cable must match the console’s output, and the TV must have a compatible composite input. An antenna-only TV cannot accept a standalone composite AV cable directly; it needs a different compatible connection route.
After powering down, reseat both ends of the cable and check that the console connector and TV plugs are in the intended sockets. If the TV has more than one input, try another compatible input and select it on the TV. If a known-good compatible cable fixes the picture, the cable or its connection was implicated; if not, continue isolating the source and display rather than repeatedly buying cables.
What should you check on an antenna or RF connection?
For RF, check the whole path: the console’s RF connection, the correct RF switch or modulator, the lead to the TV’s antenna input, and the channel setting used by that equipment. Loose connections, an incompatible RF accessory, a wrong channel setting, or interference can produce a poor picture.

Nintendo’s documented North American N64 arrangement uses an RF switch and calls for the TV and modulator to match at Channel 3 or 4. Treat that as specific to the documented equipment and market, not as a universal instruction for every console, modulator, or country. Check the manuals for the exact console and RF accessory in use.
With equipment powered down, make sure the RF plugs are secure at the console, switch or modulator, and TV. Check that the RF accessory is compatible with the console and connector type, then match the TV tuning to the channel specified for that setup. If the picture is snowy or colorless rather than steadily rolling, keep that distinction in mind: Nintendo’s RF troubleshooting separately covers fuzzy, colorless, or snowy pictures. Local interference is another possibility, so observe whether the image changes when nearby equipment or the setup changes; do not assume a cable replacement will address every RF fault.
Could a PAL/NTSC mismatch make one game roll?
Yes. A regional video-format mismatch is a documented possibility when a problem appears only with certain games. AtariAge’s Harmony manual associates rolling or black-and-white output with an NTSC game on a PAL console, or the reverse, and also notes that the wrong regional firmware can cause rolling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the game’s region and the console’s region before buying a new lead. If the hardware or cartridge has a regional setting, verify that it is appropriate for the game and display. The Harmony example does not mean every console or game has a user-selectable PAL/NTSC setting, so consult documentation for the exact hardware rather than searching for a setting that may not exist.

A game-specific symptom is a clue, not proof of a format mismatch: a fault can also involve that game, the console, or the signal path. Compare another game on the same setup and, if practical, the problem game on a known-compatible setup. Change only one variable at a time so the comparison is informative.
What if the connection is RGB or SCART?
RGB/SCART and professional-monitor setups require a cable that is wired for the particular console and a sync signal the display can accept. A plug that physically fits is not enough to establish compatibility.
Before selecting a cable or interface, identify the console’s exact model and region, the TV or monitor input, and how the cable supplies sync—such as composite video, luma, or composite sync. Specialist connection guidance warns that these wiring choices and components matter. It also cautions against joining separate VGA horizontal and vertical sync signals with a simple Y-cable: that is not a proper sync combiner.
Sync levels matter too. OmaCRT describes a 15 kHz SCART path and distinguishes VGA and SCART sync levels. Its published nominal line-rate figures are 15.734 kHz for NTSC and 15.625 kHz for PAL; these are technical specifications, not failure-rate statistics or a diagnosis of a particular TV. Do not connect VGA-level sync directly to a SCART TV on the assumption that every SCART cable or input accepts it. If the setup needs a sync interface, determine the actual signal requirements first; RGB accessories are not a general remedy for a plain composite or RF problem.

When should you stop troubleshooting?
Stop after safe external checks if the image still rolls, or if the next proposed step involves opening the cabinet, reaching internal controls, or replacing internal parts. Have a qualified person assess the specific CRT model rather than guessing at an internal fault.
iFixit EDU warns against disassembling or repairing older CRT televisions or computer monitors because of hazards including high-voltage capacitors and implosion. Turning the TV off does not make cabinet disassembly an appropriate general-reader repair step. This guide cannot identify an internal failure from the symptom alone, and it does not provide an internal service procedure.
Before seeking help, note which external checks you tried and what changed: the input selected, connection type, game or console tested, and whether another cable or display altered the symptom. That record can help someone qualified narrow down the setup without treating a guess as a diagnosis.

Should you buy a cable or degaussing coil?
Only buy a part that matches the connection and symptom you have identified. A compatible replacement cable is reasonable when comparison points to the existing cable; it is not an automatic cure for every rolling image.

| What you have | Confirm before buying | Possible route | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composite AV | Console output connector and TV composite input | A console-compatible replacement AV cable if the existing cable is implicated | It will not connect directly to an antenna-only TV. |
| RF/antenna | TV input, console-compatible switch or modulator, and the applicable channel arrangement | A compatible RF switch or modulator if the current part or connection is implicated | Channel 3/4 applies to the documented North American N64 arrangement, not every setup. |
| RGB/SCART or professional monitor | Console and region, display input, cable wiring, and sync type and level | A correctly wired RGB cable or, only after diagnosis, an appropriate sync interface | A generic SCART lead or direct VGA-sync splice may be incompatible. |
| Localized color blotches | Whether the actual issue is color distortion rather than a rolling picture | An external degaussing coil only when the symptom and setup indicate it | Degaussing is not a treatment for a continuously rolling image. |
Use the exact console model, region, connector, and TV input when checking compatibility. If you cannot confirm those details, identifying the connection path is a better first step than ordering an adapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my CRT picture roll only after loading certain games?
Some systems can encounter a video-region mismatch, and the Harmony manual specifically connects certain NTSC/PAL mismatches or regional firmware to rolling or black-and-white output. Compare the game and console regions and consult the documentation for that exact system; not all consoles expose a regional setting.
Can I fix a rolling CRT by using a degaussing coil?
A degaussing coil is associated with magnetically distorted color patches, not a picture that continuously scrolls. If the main symptom is rolling, check the signal path and accessible hold controls instead.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why is my retro game black and white on an old TV?
A regional video-format mismatch is one documented cause, particularly in the Harmony setup described by AtariAge. RF tuning or connection issues may also matter depending on the equipment, so identify whether the connection is RF, composite, or RGB before choosing a fix.
Is it safe to adjust controls inside a CRT TV?
Do not open the cabinet for this troubleshooting. CRTs can retain hazardous high voltage and present implosion risks; have a qualified repairer assess a persistent fault on the specific model.
