If your phone connects to Wi-Fi but your computer does not, the network is working for at least one device—but that does not rule out a computer setting, saved-password, compatibility, adapter, or driver problem. First confirm both devices are trying to join the same network, check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode on the computer, then forget and rejoin the network. The result of testing the computer on another network will help show whether to focus on the computer or your router.
First identify what “not connecting” means
These symptoms point to different parts of the connection. Note which one describes your computer before changing settings:
- The computer cannot see the Wi-Fi network: Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is off. A laptop may also have a physical wireless switch. If the network still does not appear, compare with another device and test the computer on another Wi-Fi network.
- The computer sees the network but will not join: A saved password or network profile may be wrong, or the computer may not work with that network’s current settings. Forget the network and reconnect, entering the password carefully.
- The computer joins Wi-Fi but has no internet: The wireless link may be working while the computer’s route to the internet is not. Check whether all websites and apps are affected; on Windows, continue with the network troubleshooter and, if needed, IP, DNS, proxy, or VPN checks.
Microsoft’s Windows guidance covers these checks for Windows 10 and Windows 11: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

Check the computer and confirm it is joining the same network
- Turn Wi-Fi on and Airplane mode off. On a laptop, check for a physical wireless switch if Wi-Fi is unavailable or no networks appear.
- Compare the network name on the phone and computer. Routers sometimes show separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Similar-looking names can also belong to different networks, so check the exact name rather than assuming both devices are connected to the same one.
- Forget and rejoin the network. On Windows, open the Wi-Fi network settings, select the saved network, choose Forget, then select it again and enter the password. Restart the computer if reconnecting does not help.
Microsoft recommends checking the intended network and forgetting and reconnecting to it. Apple likewise recommends checking the network and trying another one when an Apple device cannot connect. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Use another network to isolate the fault
If you can, connect the computer to a trusted phone hotspot or another Wi-Fi network. Also check whether another device can use your home Wi-Fi. These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular fault:
- The computer works on another network, but not at home: Focus next on the home router’s settings, supported frequency bands, or firmware. If it offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other available band.
- The computer fails on every network: A computer-side setting, wireless adapter, or driver becomes more plausible. Continue with the adapter checks below.
- Several devices fail on the home network: The router, modem, or internet service is a more likely place to investigate than one computer.
For a Mac connected to Wi-Fi but unable to reach websites or other services, Apple recommends checking the Wi-Fi connection, restarting the router, trying another network, and checking router settings. If the problem occurs only on one network, contact its administrator or internet provider. See Apple’s Mac Wi-Fi internet troubleshooting guidance.

If the computer joins Wi-Fi but has no internet
On Windows, run the network troubleshooter and check whether the problem affects multiple sites and apps or just one. A VPN, proxy, or security product can affect internet access; on a work or school computer, check with its administrator before changing managed settings or removing software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the Windows checks above do not resolve the issue, Microsoft lists advanced commands to reset Winsock and TCP/IP, release and renew the computer’s IP address, and flush DNS. These are Windows-specific troubleshooting steps, not general commands for every computer. Follow Microsoft’s instructions in its Windows Wi-Fi guide.

Check whether the wireless adapter or driver is the problem
If simpler checks fail and only this computer has trouble, investigate its wireless adapter and driver. Microsoft advises uninstalling the network-adapter driver and restarting Windows so Windows can try to reinstall it. Before doing this, obtain a backup driver from the PC manufacturer—especially if the computer has no other way to get online. Driver changes can leave the computer without Wi-Fi until a working driver is installed.
A wired Ethernet connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi trouble from a broader internet problem. Microsoft’s guidance says that if the computer gets internet over Ethernet, the connection problem is due to Wi-Fi or the router. If the computer lacks an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a wired test; it does not repair Wi-Fi. See Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

Restart the router or modem if the problem affects multiple devices
If other devices also cannot get online, restart the modem and router according to their manufacturers’ instructions. A common restart is to unplug their power, wait about 30 seconds, then reconnect it, but follow the device-specific directions if they differ. This interrupts everyone using the network while the equipment restarts.

Leave network resets until other checks fail
Windows Network reset removes network adapters and resets their settings. VPN clients or virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again afterward, so use this only after simpler troubleshooting. Apple also warns that resetting network settings on an iPhone or iPad removes saved Wi-Fi and other network configurations; it is not a first step for a computer that alone cannot connect.
