HBO Max may take a long time to load or keep buffering when your internet connection is too slow or inconsistent, other devices are using bandwidth, or the problem is limited to the streaming device or app. Check the connection first, then work through the steps below to find where the delay is coming from.
Why HBO Max loads slowly or keeps buffering
HBO Max’s US troubleshooting guidance identifies a slow or inconsistent internet connection as a cause of buffering and poor video quality. Heavy network use elsewhere in your home can also leave less bandwidth available for streaming. If other services or devices work normally, an app, device, or connection issue specific to the affected setup may be involved; the steps below help narrow that down.
HBO Max says HD streaming needs a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 50+ Mbps for the best 4K streaming experience. These are the service’s speed guidelines, not a guarantee that a stream will load quickly: connection consistency and other network activity can still affect playback. HBO Max’s slow-loading and buffering guidance does not establish whether a particular incident is caused by a current service outage.
How to troubleshoot HBO Max loading problems
- Test the connection on the affected network. Run a download-speed test on the network used by the streaming device. Compare the result with HBO Max’s stated 5 Mbps minimum for HD or its 50+ Mbps recommendation for the best 4K experience. If the result is below the stated minimum, HBO Max advises contacting your internet provider. A result above these figures does not by itself rule out an inconsistent connection.
- Pause other heavy network activity and retry. Temporarily stop large downloads or other bandwidth-intensive use by people and devices on the network. Then check whether HBO Max loads or plays more reliably.
- Restart the streaming device and network equipment. Restart the TV, streaming box, phone, or other device you use, as well as the modem and router. Follow the restart instructions for your specific equipment.
- Try another supported device on the same network. If HBO Max works there, the problem may be limited to the original device or its app. If it is also slow on the second device, the network is a stronger place to investigate. HBO Max recommends this comparison to help distinguish a network issue from a device-specific one.
- Check app and device maintenance options. On the device with the problem, check for available app or system updates and restart it. Depending on the platform, you may also be able to clear the app’s cache or data, or uninstall and reinstall the app. The available menus and steps differ by device; use the relevant HBO Max app and website troubleshooting instructions.
- Inspect existing modem and router connections. Make sure connected cables are firmly seated. HBO Max notes that a loose coaxial or Ethernet cable can weaken the signal. Check the connections you already have before considering replacement; the guidance does not recommend buying a cable as a general fix.
What the device and network tests can tell you
- Only one device has the problem: Focus on that device’s app or system updates, restart, and platform-specific cache, data, or reinstall options.
- Several devices on the same network have the problem: Check the connection speed, pause other network activity, restart network equipment, and inspect existing cable connections.
- The issue appears tied to a particular network: Where practical, try the same device on another network. Comparing the same device across networks can help you see whether the behavior follows the connection; this is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular cause.
When to contact your provider or HBO Max support
If a speed test on the affected network falls below HBO Max’s stated 5 Mbps minimum for HD, contact your internet provider, as HBO Max advises. If the issue continues on only one device after you check for updates and try the platform’s available troubleshooting steps, contact HBO Max support and note any error message or code shown on screen.
