Jeff Dean suggested the name, and Oriol Vinyals accepted it, according to Google’s account.
What “Gemini” means
Gemini is Latin for “twins.” In astronomy and mythology, Gemini is the constellation associated with the twins Castor and Pollux. Google used that twin idea as a metaphor for the legacy Google Brain and DeepMind teams working together on a multimodal AI model.
Google says those teams began joining forces in April 2023, when they formed Google DeepMind. Its December 2023 launch announcement described Gemini as the first realization of the vision behind that organization: large-scale collaboration across Google, including Google Research.
Jeff Dean, identified by Google as a Gemini co-technical lead, explained the connection this way: “I felt the twins aspect of the name ‘Gemini’ was a great fit. The twins here are the folks in the legacy Brain team and the legacy DeepMind team, who started to work together on this ambitious multimodal model project.”

How the name was chosen
Google says the project first used the placeholder name “Titan,” after Saturn’s largest moon. Dean reportedly disliked Titan, although it suggested the space-themed direction the team wanted.
Dean then proposed “Gemini” in a comment in a team document. The name stuck, and co-technical lead Oriol Vinyals supported it immediately. Vinyals said the scale of training large language models “resonated with the spirit of launching rockets” and that Gemini was fitting for “the most ambitious project we have ever embarked on.”

Was Google Gemini named after NASA’s Project Gemini?
Yes—NASA’s Project Gemini was one of Google’s stated inspirations, but it was not the only reason for the AI project’s name. Google connected the effort required to train large models with the ambition and engineering challenge of launching rockets.
NASA’s Gemini program was an early human-spaceflight project that prepared for Apollo. NASA records that “Gemini” became the official designation of the Mercury Mark II program on January 3, 1962. Alex P. Nagy of NASA Headquarters suggested the name because Castor and Pollux evoked the program’s two-person crews, rendezvous missions, and relationship to Mercury.

That is NASA’s separate 1962 naming rationale. It should not be confused with Google’s later explanation, which cites NASA’s program as an inspiration alongside the twins metaphor and the Brain–DeepMind collaboration.
