If your iPhone’s volume buttons no longer change the volume on a Spotify speaker, TV, or game console, Spotify says Apple discontinued the technology that enabled that remote control. Spotify Connect playback can still work; use Spotify’s on-screen volume slider or the playback device’s own controls instead.
What changed with Spotify Connect on iPhone?
In late August 2024, Spotify said iPhone users could no longer use the phone’s physical volume buttons to adjust volume on a device playing through Spotify Connect. The change affects remote control of the connected playback target—not the iPhone’s own local volume.
Spotify’s support documentation says: “Apple has discontinued the technology that enables Spotify to control volume for connected devices using the volume buttons on the device.” The affected targets can include connected speakers, smart TVs, and game consoles.
This is a change to the control path, not a claim that those devices have stopped playing Spotify. If a device remains available in Spotify’s Connect menu, you can still select it for playback and adjust its volume another way.

How to change the connected device’s volume from your iPhone
Spotify’s documented workaround is to use the on-screen slider. You can reach it from the volume-button notification or from the Connect device menu:
- Start Spotify playback on the connected speaker, TV, or other device.
- Press either physical volume button on the iPhone to bring up the volume notification.
- Use the on-screen slider in that notification to adjust the connected device’s volume.
- If the notification does not offer the control you need, open the Connect device menu from Spotify’s Now Playing bar, select the playback device, and adjust its volume there.
You can also use the connected device’s own volume controls when available. Spotify says it is working with Apple on a solution, but its support material does not give a date for restoring hardware-button control.

Can Spotify still play through Alexa, a TV, or a game console?
The volume-button change does not by itself remove these devices as Spotify playback targets. Spotify’s support information refers to connected speakers and Amazon Alexa-linked devices; TVs and game consoles are also among the affected Connect targets. Availability depends on the particular device and its Spotify support. Use Spotify’s Connect menu to see the playback targets available to your account.
For an Alexa-linked speaker, you can adjust volume through Spotify’s in-app slider or the speaker’s own controls. The iPhone buttons no longer provide the same direct remote-volume control for a Spotify Connect target.

Why Spotify blames Apple—and what Apple says
Spotify attributes the lost control to Apple discontinuing the technology that let an iPhone app use the hardware volume buttons to control a connected device. In contemporaneous coverage, Spotify also framed the dispute in relation to interoperability under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act; TechCrunch reported on that position.
Apple’s response emphasized the tools available to developers. In a March 4, 2024 statement, Apple said Spotify could access more than 250,000 APIs and used 60 Apple frameworks, including tools for Bluetooth, notifications, and background audio.

Those statements describe the companies’ competing positions; they do not independently establish Apple’s intent or settle the technical and regulatory dispute. Apple also cited figures about its platform and the European music market, but those figures are context—not measurements of how many users lost volume-button control or of the incident’s impact.

| Control method | Connection or control path | What the volume control affects |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify’s iPhone slider | Spotify Connect; use the notification slider or the Connect menu | The selected connected playback device |
| Playback device controls | Buttons or controls on the speaker, TV, console, or other playback device | The device’s playback volume |
| Voice assistant | For supported Alexa-linked playback, issue a volume command to the assistant | The linked speaker or playback device, subject to that device’s controls |
| iPhone hardware volume buttons | iPhone’s local volume control | The iPhone’s own audio volume, not the Spotify Connect target through the discontinued control path |
Bluetooth, AirPlay, and other casting methods use different connection and control paths from Spotify Connect. Which device receives a volume change depends on the chosen playback method and its compatibility; the specific Spotify support statement concerns remote volume control of a Spotify Connect target from iPhone hardware buttons. Changing connection methods may change what the buttons control, but it is not the same as restoring that Connect feature.
