Apple defines the compressed size as the download size and the uncompressed size as equivalent to the installed app size. The app’s content and related data can add to that footprint, too.
Download size and installed size measure different things
The App Store’s download figure describes the compressed app package transferred to your iPhone. Once installed, that package is expanded into the files the app needs to run. Apple states that “the uncompressed size is equivalent to the size of the installed app on the device.” Apple’s developer documentation illustrates the difference with one sample app: 6.7 MB compressed and 18.6 MB uncompressed. That is an example, not a typical ratio; there is no single multiplier that applies to every app.
App content and data can add to the footprint
The installed app is not necessarily the only storage associated with it. Apple’s iPhone Storage guidance says the Apps category includes installed apps and their content. Depending on the app, the space shown for it can therefore reflect more than the original download. The amount varies, so use the app’s current entry in iPhone Storage rather than treating its App Store download size as its total ongoing footprint.
How to check an app’s storage on iPhone
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the app list, then tap an app to see its storage details and available actions.
Apple notes that cached and temporary data might not be counted in the usage shown. The displayed figure is useful for managing storage, but it is not guaranteed to inventory every transient byte. Apple’s storage guidance explains the categories and available controls.

App delivery can vary by device
Developers can use app thinning so a device receives the code and resources it needs, rather than every asset for every supported device. This affects what is delivered, but it does not make the App Store download figure a guarantee of the app’s complete storage use after installation.
Apple also documents on-demand resources: assets hosted separately from the app bundle that can be downloaded when needed. This feature is version-sensitive. Apple’s current App Store Connect guidance says on-demand resources are deprecated on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27, with support to be removed in future releases.

Free space without losing app data
iPhone Storage offers two different actions; choose based on whether you want to keep the app’s documents and data.

| Delete App | Removes the app and its related data. |
Some apps also let you remove some documents or data separately. These distinctions are described in Apple’s iPhone and iPad storage instructions.
