iPad apps can reload because iPadOS suspends apps you leave and may close a background app when it needs memory. An app still visible in the App Switcher is not necessarily still running. A reload is often normal system behavior, though a particular app may also be failing to preserve its state or encountering a fault.

What happens when you switch away from an app

After you move to another app, the previous app may keep running briefly and then enter a suspended state. Apple describes suspended apps as not actively in use. iPadOS can later terminate a background app to reclaim memory, especially when the foreground app needs more. Returning to an app that was terminated requires it to launch again.

This does not, on its own, mean the iPad is defective. The App Switcher shows apps you have used; it does not promise that each one remains active in memory. Apple explains the lifecycle in its guide to switching apps and discusses memory-related terminations in its developer documentation on jetsam event reports and reducing app terminations.

How to tell what kind of reload you are seeing

A launch screen, lost place in a document, or content loading again can suggest that an app restarted, but none proves why it happened. Sometimes the app remains open while only its online content refreshes. Network conditions or an app’s own refresh behavior can account for that.

What you notice What it may mean What to try
The app resumes after a brief switch It may have remained suspended in memory. No action is needed.
A launch screen appears after a longer switch or demanding use iPadOS may have terminated the background app, or the app may have relaunched for another reason. Avoid routinely force closing apps; observe whether this happens with one app or several.
One app repeatedly loses its place An app-specific fault, state-restoration problem, or data-loading issue is possible. Update the app and contact its developer.
The app is frozen or unresponsive This is more consistent with an app problem than ordinary suspension. Close and reopen it; restart iPad if it remains stuck.
The app stays open but its content refreshes A network issue or content refresh may be involved. Check your connection and the app’s refresh behavior.

Whether one or many apps are affected, whether the iPad is generally slow or unusually hot, and whether the app loses its place or only refreshes content can help narrow the possibilities. These clues do not let a user confirm memory pressure; developers use diagnostic information such as jetsam reports to investigate terminations.

What to do when apps keep reloading

  1. Stop force closing apps as a routine. Swipe an app away only when it is stuck or unresponsive. Apple warns that unnecessary force closing can make reopening slower because the app must reload its data. See Apple’s guidance for a slow iPhone or iPad.
  2. Update the affected app and iPadOS. If only one app repeatedly loses its state, an update may help, but there is no universal fix established for every app-specific cause. Contact the app’s developer if the issue continues.
  3. Close and reopen an app that is stuck. If it still does not respond, restart iPad. Apple recommends this recovery path for an app that will not work as expected in its app troubleshooting guide.
  4. Check general performance factors if the whole iPad feels slow. Check connection quality, available storage at Settings > General > iPad Storage, and Low Power Mode under Settings > Battery. Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free storage to avoid slowdowns; this is general performance advice, not a threshold for keeping apps in memory. Also consider whether the iPad is unusually hot or cold. These checks may help with general slowness, but they do not guarantee that iPadOS will keep a background app resident.
  5. Use Background App Refresh for content updates, not to prevent reloads. It can let apps check for updates while suspended; it does not guarantee that an app stays in memory or runs continuously. Apple explains the feature in its app-switching guidance. Quitting an app may prevent its background checks until you open it again.

When to contact the app developer

If the same app repeatedly loses work or its place while other apps resume normally, record the app name, iPad model, iPadOS version, what else was open, and whether the problem followed a crash or a force quit. Give that information to the developer and ask whether the app saves and restores its state across launches. Apple’s developer guidance describes jetsam reports and related logs as tools for diagnosing memory conditions; users generally cannot identify the cause of a specific reload from the animation or App Switcher preview alone.

Does iPadOS multitasking change this?

Apple’s iPadOS 26 multitasking features include windowed apps, switching among open windows, and arranging apps side by side. They change how apps are displayed and switched, but Apple does not say they prevent suspension or memory-pressure termination. Menu names and controls can differ by installed iPadOS version, so follow the labels on your device.
