Humanoid robot hands struggle with delicate objects because safe grasping is a feedback problem, not simply a matter of closing fingers gently. The hand has to detect contact, judge whether an object is slipping, and adjust its grip without exceeding the object’s tolerance. Engineers combine tactile sensing, compliant or underactuated mechanisms, and feedback control to meet that challenge, but successful laboratory demonstrations do not establish reliable handling of arbitrary fragile objects in everyday settings.

Why is gentle grasping difficult?

A hand must manage changing contacts

Vision may show where an object is, but it cannot always tell a robot whether its fingertips have made stable contact, whether the object is starting to slide, or how much force it can safely withstand. As a multifingered hand closes or repositions, its contacts can shift. The controller must coordinate many joints and respond to those changes in real time.

A 2022 survey describes the problem as one of high-dimensional states and actions, frequent changes in interaction mode, and difficulty transferring control methods between hands with different structures, actuators, and degrees of freedom. Techniques that work for a simple two-finger gripper therefore do not automatically work for a dexterous hand. Frontiers in Neurorobotics’ survey of multifingered manipulation outlines these design and control challenges.

Strength, precision, weight, and sensing compete for space

A compact hand has to fit joints, tendons or linkages, motors, and sensors into limited space. The same survey notes the difficulty of integrating distributed, multimodal sensors and precise actuators while meeting weight and payload requirements. A design that prioritizes strength or durability may make different trade-offs from one built for precise, compliant contact.

Objects do not behave alike

Shape, stiffness, friction, and fragility all affect a grasp. A fixed finger-closing motion cannot reliably account for every object and contact condition. Feedback matters because a robot needs to adjust to what its fingers feel, including contact changes that may be hidden from its camera.

How engineers help robot hands handle delicate objects

Use touch to change the grasp

Tactile sensors can provide information about contact and interaction at the fingertips or across the hand. Applications described in the 2022 survey include estimating grasp stability, controlling force, tactile servoing, and detecting slip. The important step is to use those measurements in a feedback loop: when the robot detects a contact change or slip, it adjusts its action.

A 2026 review emphasizes active contact regulation, including responding to slip and respecting force limits. Merely adding tactile sensors for data collection or passive sensor fusion may not help if their readings do not change what the controller does. The review covers work published from January 2020 through December 2025; that range describes its scope, not a performance result. The review’s discussion of tactile sensing and dexterous control also considers the challenges of integrating sensing, embodiment, and control.

Let the hand conform to the object

Compliant structures can deform or adapt to an object’s shape, so a grasp does not depend on every fingertip landing in exactly the right place. Underactuation is one way to achieve that adaptability: fewer actuators drive more joints, often through tendons or linkages, allowing fingers to conform together rather than being positioned entirely independently.

The Pisa/IIT SoftHand used in a 2023 study is a tendon-driven, underactuated hand with compliant mechanical synergies. It pairs that adaptability with high-resolution tactile sensing at each fingertip. This is a trade-off, not a universal solution: a hand that conforms readily may offer less independent finger control, and the right balance depends on the task’s precision and object variation. The broader design differences between hands are one reason methods do not transfer easily across hardware.

Regulate grip force with feedback

In their 2023 study, Ford and colleagues used tactile feedback from all five SoftHand fingertip sensors to produce a gentle, stable grasp and respond to external disturbances. They report tests involving 43 objects with varying geometries and stiffnesses, as well as a human-to-robot handover application. The study and its evaluation demonstrate a particular hand, sensing arrangement, controller, and test set—not general-purpose handling of every fragile object.

Design the hand, sensing, and control as one system

Mechanical compliance, sensor placement, perception, and control affect one another. A hand’s structure determines what it can sense and how it can move; the controller must turn those readings into useful adjustments. The 2026 review argues that deployment also requires recovery and degradation strategies, rather than assuming every grasp proceeds as planned.

What evidence shows—and what it does not

The SoftHand study is evidence that tactile feedback can support gentle grasping across a varied, defined object set. It is not evidence that humanoid hands can safely handle arbitrary fragile objects in homes, workplaces, or other unstructured environments. The study concerns a particular anthropomorphic hand in controlled experiments; its object tests and handover task do not establish performance across other hands or settings.

Broader reviews identify unresolved issues in standardized comparative benchmarks, safety evidence, long-term reliability, and integration across mechanics, perception, and control. A successful demonstration is therefore a useful research result, but not by itself proof of deployment readiness.

How to compare approaches to delicate grasping

What to compare Questions to ask
Contact sensing What does the system sense—force, pressure, tactile images, or slip cues? Where are sensors placed, and does the controller react to their readings?
Compliance and actuation How well does the hand conform to varied shapes, and how independently can it position and control each finger?
Task evidence Which object geometries and stiffnesses were tested? Were fragility, disturbances, or handovers included?
Performance and reliability How are precision, efficiency, robustness, safety, adaptation, and performance over time evaluated? Reviews call for more standardized comparisons on these dimensions.
Integration and transfer Does the design and controller work across different hand hardware, objects, and task conditions, or only in the specific setup tested?
