A handheld’s power limit sets a ceiling or target for the power available to its processor; it does not set a frame rate. Raising that limit can help, but the result depends on the game, the device’s chip and cooling, its power policy, and whether it is plugged in or running on battery. The practical goal is not maximum wattage: it is stable performance at a level of heat, fan noise, and battery use you find acceptable.
What a power limit changes
Handheld gaming PCs typically combine CPU and integrated graphics in one processor and share a compact power and cooling budget. A higher limit can give the processor more room to work, but it does not guarantee that every game will use that extra headroom or turn it into more frames.
Games place different demands on the system. A CPU-heavy simulation, a graphics-heavy game, and a title constrained by memory bandwidth or software behavior can respond differently to the same setting. There is no universal CPU-versus-GPU power split that applies to every game, so it is misleading to assume every title is graphics-bound.
Why the same wattage can produce different results
The device and processor matter
Wattage alone does not make two handhelds equivalent. Processor generation, graphics resources, memory, cooling, firmware, and each vendor’s power policy all affect performance. ASUS lists a 9–30 W range for both the ROG Ally Z1 and Z1 Extreme configurations, even though their CPU and graphics resources differ. That range is a product specification, not a promise that a device will sustain the same power in every mode. See ASUS’s ROG Ally announcement and AMD’s Ryzen Z-series information.

Power source and profile matter
A handheld may behave differently on AC power and battery, and its selected profile can change the available power or frame-rate target. ASUS identifies Turbo operation at 30 W on AC in its test conditions; that result should not be treated as a battery-mode result. Tom’s Hardware also calls out battery power as relevant when assessing handheld performance. A plugged-in maximum-power benchmark and a battery-limited run are not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Profiles can set more than power. Microsoft says Default Game Profiles for games sold through the Xbox Store on PC apply per-game device settings on ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, using TDP and FPS limits to balance performance and battery life. A frame-rate cap can therefore be part of the power-saving choice, not merely a separate graphics setting. See Microsoft’s Game Profiles announcement.

Cooling, noise, and sustained play matter
More power can mean more heat for the cooling system to manage and more fan activity, while a short benchmark may not represent a longer session. GamersNexus includes thermal and acoustic testing alongside performance testing, illustrating why temperatures and noise belong beside frame rates in a full comparison. There is no universal handheld temperature threshold or throttling point established here; use device-specific measurements rather than assuming one.
Benefits can taper off
Extra power is useful only while it addresses the constraint limiting a game or helps meet a desired frame-rate target. Once another constraint dominates—or the game already meets the target—raising the limit may consume more energy without a meaningful improvement for the player.

For context, Phoronix reported the ROG Ally averaging 30% faster than Steam Deck in the benchmark-friendly games in its 2023 comparison, and a 74% Ally advantage in its power-hungry performance ACPI profile. Those are review-specific device-comparison results, not a measurement of how much performance a fixed increase in watts produces. The review’s results should be read in light of its devices, games, and test conditions: Phoronix’s Steam Deck versus ROG Ally comparison.
How to choose a power limit for a game
- Set the goal first. Decide what frame rate you want and whether battery runtime, fan noise, or device temperature is a priority.
- Start with a lower power profile. Test the game at the resolution, graphics preset, and frame-rate cap you intend to use. If it already meets your target with stable frame delivery, more power may not be worthwhile.
- Raise the limit only to address a shortfall. If performance misses your goal, increase power in the device’s available steps and compare repeatable runs. Keep other settings constant so the result is interpretable.
- Adjust the frame-rate cap where supported. If you do not need the highest possible frame rate, a cap can avoid spending power on frames you do not want.
- Check the whole experience. Consider frame-time consistency, battery use, heat, and fan noise as well as average FPS. Choose the lowest limit that delivers acceptable play for that title on that device.
The exact best setting is specific to the handheld and game. The available evidence does not support a universal recommended wattage.

How to compare power-limit results fairly
A useful comparison separates same-device power scaling from comparisons between different handhelds. For either kind, disclose enough conditions that readers can tell what the numbers represent. The following checklist is a practical reporting approach, not a formal benchmark standard.
- Handheld model and processor
- Game and game version
- Resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame-generation settings, and frame-rate cap
- Power limit or profile, and whether the device ran on AC or battery
- Test duration, repeatable run method, and relevant driver and software versions
- Average FPS and frame-time consistency
- Battery draw or runtime, temperature, and fan noise only when actually measured
For example, reporting “30 W” without identifying AC or battery operation, the profile, game settings, and duration leaves important context out. Review protocols differ: ASUS documents AC Turbo conditions, while other reviews include different devices and test modes. Tom’s Hardware and GamersNexus provide examples of the device-specific context and broader measurements that can affect how results should be read: Tom’s Hardware’s ROG Ally review and GamersNexus’s Steam Deck OLED review and benchmarks.
