Growth alone is not a reason to switch: QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced include Projects features for job costing and project profitability, according to Intuit. The practical question is whether the plan and workflow in use can meet the company’s actual reporting and control needs.
Why construction finance can outgrow a basic accounting workflow
Construction accounting has to connect the general ledger to the economics and billing status of individual jobs. A contractor may need to track labor, materials, equipment, and subcontract costs against a job budget; reconcile those costs with contract billing; and explain whether a project is ahead or behind financially.
Construction finance products may offer more explicit support for these workflows. Sage describes job-cost tracking by cost type, budget-versus-actual reporting, WIP, progress and milestone billing, retainage, and change-order billing among its construction capabilities. These are vendor-described features, not proof that QuickBooks cannot support any particular process.
What usually prompts a contractor to evaluate a change
Job costs arrive too late or lack useful detail
If managers cannot compare actual labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs with each job’s budget at a useful level and on a useful schedule, they may struggle to spot overruns while there is still time to respond. The test is not whether a system has a job-costing label; it is whether the configured process produces figures the company can trust and act on.
#1 Best Overall
WIP and billing are difficult to reconcile
WIP reporting, progress billing, retainage, and change-order billing can become central controls when a contractor has multiple active contracts and billing events. A finance team should be able to produce and explain its view of work performed, costs incurred, amounts billed, and contract changes consistently. Sage lists these construction workflows in its construction finance offerings; the comparison should focus on what the contractor’s own current workflow can reliably do.
Project and finance information lives in disconnected processes
Some contractors look for a setup that connects project operations with accounting rather than relying on duplicate entry or manual reconciliation. Sage markets an integration between Sage Intacct Construction and Procore as a way to connect financial and operational workflows. That is vendor positioning, so a prospective customer should verify exactly which data moves, which system owns each record, and how exceptions and reconciliation are handled.
QuickBooks may still be enough
Intuit says QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced include Projects functionality for job costing and project profitability. Contractors should identify their current plan, configure the available project features, and test them against real reporting requirements before concluding that a different accounting system is necessary.
A move is easier to justify when a specific process or control gap is demonstrated—for example, the business cannot consistently produce the job-level cost detail or billing-status reports it needs—not simply because the company is larger than it used to be. This is a decision framework based on the stated product capabilities, not a universal threshold or a claim that one product is right for every contractor.

How to compare construction finance options
Start with the jobs, contracts, and reporting decisions the system must support. Sage’s official materials describe Sage Intacct Construction and Sage 100 Contractor as construction offerings, but the features available and their suitability should be confirmed with the vendor. The two sources cited here are not a complete market comparison.
| Comparison area | What to verify |

What the historical adoption figures can—and cannot—say
In its 2021 technology report, Associated Builders and Contractors reported that QuickBooks (29%), Sage (22%), and Deltek plus ComputerEase (12%) were the top three accounting and billing software choices among the survey’s respondents. These are historical respondent figures, not established current market shares; the reported result does not establish a sample size. It offers context about reported choices at that time, not a recommendation or evidence that a contractor should migrate.
