Googlebooks could open Slack in Chrome, but a 9to5Google report published October 5, 2026, found that Slack’s web app could not be installed as a progressive web app (PWA) on the platform at launch. The installer displayed “this app cannot be installed.” A browser shortcut remained available, but it opened Slack in a Chrome tab rather than a separate app window.
What failed—and what still worked
The reported problem was specifically with installing Slack’s website as a PWA on Googlebook. It does not mean Slack was completely inaccessible: the report says users could create a shortcut that opened Slack in Chrome. The distinction matters because a PWA installation normally provides a more app-like, standalone window, while the reported shortcut did not.
According to Ben Schoon’s October 5, 2026 report for 9to5Google, the installation attempt produced the message “this app cannot be installed.” The report does not establish that every Googlebook user or every Slack access method was affected beyond that attempted PWA installation.
Why the cause is not yet clear
The report does not identify the cause. It could not establish whether the issue came from Slack’s PWA setup, Googlebook’s compatibility requirements, or another factor. Although the report says Google had been contacted, it provides no explanation from Google and confirms no fix or resolution date. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a reported launch-day installation failure than as a confirmed platform-wide defect with a known remedy.

Available ways to use Slack on Googlebook
| Access method | What the report says | Practical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Slack web app installed as a PWA | The installation attempt displayed “this app cannot be installed.” | It could not be installed in the reported test. |
| Slack website shortcut in Chrome | A shortcut could open Slack in a Chrome tab. | It did not open in its own separate window. |
| Slack Android app | The Play Store label reportedly said “better on the website.” | The report characterized the Android app as having poor support beyond a standard smartphone; it did not provide a full feature comparison. |
The Play Store wording points users toward the website, but the reported PWA failure means the browser shortcut was the described fallback for a laptop-like experience. The source does not establish which Slack features work in each route or whether the Android app is unusable on Googlebook.
Does this mean other Googlebook PWAs are broken?
No. The same report says Photopea, Squoosh, and SnapDrop appeared to work when tested. That suggests the reported failure was not universal across those examples, but it does not prove that every other PWA works or establish why Slack behaved differently.

What Googlebook is in this report
The report describes Googlebook as an Android-based platform that uses native Android apps and PWAs for some experiences. Its first devices were on sale and shipping when the article was published. The available evidence is tied to the platform’s launch period in October 2026; it does not establish whether a later software update or vendor change altered Slack installation behavior.
