Travel mode, route preferences, departure or arrival time, traffic, transit schedules, and—in some cases—your Google Account can affect what Maps displays. Google does not publish the full routing algorithm, so a mismatch alone does not identify a device fault or a specific cause.
Why the highlighted route can differ
Google says the transport options it displays are ranked using a combination of objective factors. Those can include estimated duration, distance, price, mode preference, and relevance to the search. Google says mode preference, trip duration, and sometimes price are generally among the most important factors, but it does not publish numerical weights or promise identical results across devices. The blue line marks the route Maps currently presents as the best option among those shown; gray lines are alternatives. It does not prove that both devices used the same inputs. You can tap or click an alternate route to compare it with the selected one.
Different modes and route preferences
Check that both devices use the same travel mode. Google Maps supports directions for modes including driving, transit, walking, cycling, ride sharing, flights, and motorcycles, though some modes and features are limited by location. Driving preferences can also differ: Google documents options for avoiding tolls or highways, and Android instructions include HOV preferences and estimated toll prices in some contexts. These are route options, not guarantees that every toll or highway segment will be excluded.

Different departure times, traffic, or transit schedules
A route calculated for now may differ from one calculated for a later departure or arrival. Google lets users set a leave or arrival time to find routes based on estimated traffic and transit schedules. Its help page says this timing feature applies to routes with one destination. Navigation also uses real-time traffic information, so conditions can change between comparisons. Account-specific regular routes
If Timeline is on, Maps might show directions for regular routes. Google says those regular routes are visible only to you, but does not explain exactly how they affect route ranking. This makes the signed-in account worth checking when comparing devices.

Platform and regional availability
Directions and features are not available uniformly everywhere. Google notes that some directions have limited availability and that navigation or lane information may not be available in every country, region, or language. Interface labels and controls can also vary by platform and change over time.
How to compare routes fairly
Use the same inputs on both devices to narrow down what may be causing the difference. This comparison can help isolate variables, but it cannot guarantee identical routing.

- Enter the same endpoints manually. Use the same origin and destination rather than relying on a saved place or suggested start point.
- Match the travel mode. Confirm that both devices are set to the same mode, such as driving or transit.
- Match route options. Compare avoid-tolls and avoid-highways settings, plus HOV preferences where available. Do not treat these options as an absolute exclusion of toll or highway segments.
- Set the same time. If timing is available for the route, compare the same leave or arrival time. This matters especially for traffic-sensitive driving routes and transit schedules.
- Check the account. Sign in to the same Google Account on both devices if regular routes or Timeline may be relevant.
- Compare alternatives, not only the blue line. Look at the estimated duration, distance, toll exposure or price when shown, and any practical route constraints. Select the gray alternatives to inspect them.
What a route mismatch does—and does not—tell you
A difference does not by itself show that Google intentionally favors one device, that a phone is defective, or that settings have failed to sync. Public Google documentation describes factors and options that may shape displayed routes, but it does not provide a complete list of routing inputs, a cross-device consistency guarantee, or a way to reproduce an internal route calculation.
Before following any route, use road signs and obey applicable traffic rules. Maps’ suggestions are guidance, not a substitute for safe, lawful driving.
