Excluding large-scale orders, orders declined just 0.1% month on month. The three-month trend excluding those contracts was weaker, however, so the data show both volatility and underlying softness.
Why did German industrial orders fall in August 2026?
The main cause was a sharp reversal in orders for other transport equipment, a category that includes aircraft, ships and railway rolling stock. In July, orders in that category had surged 129.4% month on month after an exceptionally high volume of large contracts. In August, they fell 61.5%, seasonally and calendar adjusted. Destatis says that decline explains almost all of the overall fall in manufacturing orders.
Because the July comparison was unusually high, August’s headline decline is especially sensitive to the timing of a few large contracts. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) reported that total real, price-adjusted manufacturing orders fell 10.6% month on month in August. Its measure excluding large-scale orders fell only 0.1% over the same period. The August results are provisional. Destatis press release, 6 October 2026.
What do the figures show over different time periods?
The result changes with the comparison window. The month-on-month figure captures the sharp reversal from July’s exceptional order volume; the three-month comparison smooths some of that volatility, while the year-on-year figure compares August with the same month a year earlier.

#1 Best Overall
| Comparison | Manufacturing orders | Excluding large-scale orders |
|---|---|---|
| August 2026 vs. July 2026, seasonally and calendar adjusted | -10.6% | -0.1% |
| June–August 2026 vs. preceding three months | +1.3% | -2.6% |
| August 2026 vs. August 2025, calendar adjusted | +2.7% | not stated in the cited Destatis release |
These figures are not contradictory. The three-month total was 1.3% higher than in the preceding three months, but 2.6% lower when large-scale orders are excluded. That divergence shows how strongly the large contracts affected the overall trend. The year-on-year increase of 2.7% uses a different comparison and adjustment basis, so it should not be read as a seasonally adjusted monthly growth rate. Figures are from Destatis.
Which parts of demand weakened?
Destatis reported declines across the main goods categories and in both domestic and foreign orders in August. The monthly figures below are seasonally and calendar adjusted.
- By type of goods: capital-goods orders fell 15.3%, intermediate-goods orders fell 2.6%, and consumer-goods orders fell 7.3%.
- By origin: domestic orders fell 17.3% and foreign orders fell 5.4%. Within foreign orders, euro-area orders fell 5.4% and orders from outside the euro area fell 5.5%.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy also pointed to state procurement as a source of recent volatility, saying domestic capital-goods demand fell sharply after earlier increases associated with government large orders. That is the ministry’s interpretation of the pattern, rather than a separate statistical finding by Destatis. Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, 6 October 2026.
Why do orders and industrial production point in different directions?
Destatis’s press-release listing on 7 October reported that industrial production rose 2.0% month on month in August 2026. That does not undo the decline in orders: production measures goods made, while new orders measure incoming orders. Production can reflect work already in the pipeline, whereas orders can fluctuate sharply when large contracts are placed or completed. The two indicators describe different stages of industrial activity, not competing measurements of the same thing. Destatis industrial production release listing, 7 October 2026.

How Destatis measures new orders
The order index is real, or price-adjusted, and covers selected manufacturing branches classified under WZ 2008. Its base year is 2021=100; Destatis uses X13 JDemetra+ for seasonal and calendar adjustment. Month-on-month figures are seasonally and calendar adjusted, while year-on-year figures are calendar adjusted. Those adjustments and comparison periods matter when interpreting the numbers: they are designed for different kinds of comparison.
Detailed official series are available through Destatis’s GENESIS-Online database: 42151-0004, new orders; 42151-0008, new orders excluding large-scale orders; and 42152-0004, turnover. Destatis also provides an Economic Dashboard.
