Check the service’s latency test, then isolate those parts of the setup one at a time. A fast speed test alone cannot show whether the connection is responsive enough for cloud gaming.
Why GeForce NOW can lag on Chromecast with Google TV
Cloud gaming depends on a chain: your controller sends input, the Chromecast sends it over your home network and the internet to an NVIDIA data center, and the returned video is displayed by your TV. Delay anywhere along that path can make a game feel sluggish. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guide cautions that “Each network component can add latency to your overall experience, resulting in lag.” NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance describes possible causes; it does not establish which one affects your setup.
Bandwidth and latency are different measurements. Bandwidth is the amount of data your connection can carry; latency is the time it takes data to travel to a destination and back. You can have enough bandwidth for a stream yet still experience noticeable delay if latency is high or inconsistent.
Check NVIDIA’s connection requirements and latency
NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW requirements for Android TV specify at least 15 Mbps for HD streaming at up to 60 FPS and 25 Mbps for FHD at up to 60 FPS. The same page sets a latency requirement of less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. These are service requirements, not a promise that a particular connection will feel lag-free. See NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system requirements; requirements may change.

- Watch the entertainment you love with Chromecast with Google TV, including live TV in up to 4K HDR; discover over 700,000 movies and TV episodes, plus millions of songs
- Get fast streaming, and enjoy a crystal clear picture up to 4K and brighter colors with HDR
- Your home screen displays movies and TV shows from all your services in one place with Chromecast 4K; get personal recommendations based on your subscriptions, viewing habits, and content you own
- Press the Google Assistant button on the remote and use voice search to find specific shows, youtube tv streaming, or search by mood, genre, actress, and more; control the volume, switch inputs, play music, and get answers, hands-free
- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
- Open GeForce NOW and run its network test, or check the session statistics if available.
- Note both bandwidth and the reported latency to NVIDIA’s data center. Compare latency with NVIDIA’s under-80-ms requirement; do not use a speed-test download result as a substitute.
- Repeat the test after changing only one connection or device setting. This makes it easier to tell whether that change affected the result.
A result within the stated requirement does not rule out every cause of perceived lag: controller response and TV processing are separate parts of the chain.
Compare 5 GHz Wi-Fi with a wired connection
NVIDIA recommends a wired Ethernet connection or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If you are currently using Wi-Fi, try 5 GHz if your router and setup support it. If practical, compare that with Ethernet to see whether changing the local connection improves the test or gameplay.

Chromecast with Google TV supports Ethernet but has no built-in Ethernet port, so a compatible adapter is needed for a wired test. Google documents this distinction in its Chromecast connection troubleshooting. Ethernet is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix: lag may originate elsewhere, and adapter compatibility matters.
- Record the network-test latency and how the game feels on your current connection.
- Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or connect a compatible Ethernet adapter, changing one thing at a time.
- Run the same test again and compare the figures and the gameplay response.
If neither connection type changes the result, that points away from a simple Wi-Fi-only explanation, but does not identify the remaining cause.

Separate controller delay from streaming delay
Notice what “lag” looks like. If the picture itself arrives late or stutters, the issue may involve the network or video path. If the stream looks smooth but button presses or stick movement feel delayed, controller input deserves a separate check.
NVIDIA lists Xbox and Sony gamepads for Android TV or Chromecast in its GeForce NOW requirements. NVIDIA’s older troubleshooting guide also warns that third-party controllers can add latency. Confirm that your controller is supported; if you already have another supported gamepad, compare it as a test. A supported controller can address compatibility questions, but swapping controllers is not evidence that network latency will improve.

Try the TV’s Game Mode
Some TVs process the incoming image before displaying it, which can add delay. NVIDIA’s older troubleshooting guide says, “Some TV models can add lag to GeForce NOW because they perform video image preprocessing,” and suggests checking whether Game Mode helps. NVIDIA’s guide notes that behavior varies across televisions.
- Find your TV’s picture or game settings and enable Game Mode, if available.
- If Game Mode is unavailable, check whether the TV offers image-processing options that can be disabled.
- Compare the same game and connection before and after the change. TV menu labels and results vary by model.
When to consider new hardware
Buy an accessory only when it helps test a specific cause. A compatible Ethernet adapter makes it possible to compare a wired connection on Chromecast with Google TV; it does not guarantee that lag will go away. A supported Xbox or PlayStation controller is relevant if you need a compatible gamepad or want to compare input response. Neither purchase should be treated as a general fix for an unmeasured problem.

If latency remains poor on both 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Ethernet, or the delay persists despite a good network test and changes to controller and TV settings, the available official guidance does not identify a definitive fix for every setup. Avoid assuming a new router, subscription tier, or adapter will solve it without evidence from a comparison.
