Some developers leave a harmless bug alone because fixing it could remove a moment players enjoy, while the fix consumes time and may introduce new problems. That is different from deliberately designing a feature, and different again from postponing a bug because it is difficult or low-priority. Goat Simulator offers a clear, unusual example of a team intentionally keeping entertaining bugs; it does not show that every funny glitch is planned or that serious faults should be ignored.
What counts as a bug in a game?
A bug is behavior that differs from what the developers expected. That definition describes a mismatch between intent and outcome; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the result is harmful, noticeable, or enjoyable. Fire Hose Games’ QA director uses this expectation-based framing in an account about evaluating bugs in Techtonica (Fire Hose Games’ QA account).
For example, an animation may play at an unexpected angle, or an interaction between systems may produce a surprising result. If the effect is brief and does not obstruct play, a player might laugh and move on. If another unexpected behavior crashes the game, erases progress, or makes an objective impossible, its impact is very different. Calling both outcomes “bugs” does not make them equally urgent.

- Keep intentionally: The team recognizes the behavior and chooses to preserve it, perhaps because it contributes to the experience.
- Defer: The team may want to fix it, but gives higher priority to other work or judges that a fix is too risky or costly right now.
- Discover and develop: An unexpected interaction suggests an idea the team later shapes into a deliberate feature. The resulting feature is not necessarily a bug that was simply left in place.
A player seeing an unfixed issue cannot reliably tell which decision was made—or whether the team has identified the issue at all. The same visible behavior can have different explanations.
What is emergent play, and how is it related to bugs?
Emergent play happens when systems and player actions combine to create experiences that were not laid out as one wholly scripted sequence. A bug can sometimes contribute to that kind of play, but emergent play is broader than bugs: systems can produce surprising outcomes while behaving as designed.
In an interview about the scope and vision of Skyrim, Todd Howard discussed unscripted, dynamic non-player characters and the unexpected actions players take in an open-ended game (Game Developer’s Todd Howard interview). That supports a point about open-ended design and the unpredictability of player behavior; it does not establish that Bethesda deliberately keeps every entertaining glitch.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallConsider the distinction this way: in an emergent situation, a player might use ordinary game systems in an unforeseen combination. In a bug, something behaves contrary to what its developers expected. Sometimes those descriptions overlap—a defect may create a surprising interaction—but neither term is a synonym for the other. A team can build a game to invite unscripted outcomes without intending every possible outcome, and an unintended result can be funny without being a designed feature.

Why would a developer keep a funny glitch?
A team may preserve a bug when it contributes to the game’s tone or creates an experience players value, and when the harm of keeping it is acceptably low. Goat Simulator is an explicit example, not proof that this choice is standard across the industry.
Goat Simulator made the choice unusually clear
Coffee Stain Studios’ Steam description says: “We’re only eliminating the crash-bugs, everything else is hilarious and we’re keeping it” (the publisher’s Goat Simulator Steam page). The publisher also identifies unstable physics as part of the game’s character. In a 2015 postmortem, developer Armin Ibrisagic described the team’s decision to preserve bugs that made the original trailer and game fun (Ibrisagic’s Goat Simulator postmortem).
The postmortem gives a useful boundary to the example. The jetpack and Tall Goat were deliberate additions, not bugs; they show the team exploring ideas, but should not be described as glitches it chose to leave unfixed. The account also describes performance problems from the many simulated physics objects and says the team kept optimizing. In other words, preserving comic behavior did not mean treating every technical problem as part of the joke.
Ibrisagic reported that the initial trailer received about one million views in a week. That is a retrospective figure about the trailer, not a count of bugs or evidence that glitches alone caused the attention. The example is valuable because the publisher stated its keep-the-funny-bugs policy plainly—not because it proves that all studios follow it.

Why creative fit matters
In a deliberately chaotic comedy, an awkward physics reaction may reinforce the intended tone. Removing it could make the game more orderly but less amusing. That reasoning is specific to the behavior and the experience it produces; the fact that a game is comedic does not make every defect beneficial.
Why do teams fix some bugs but defer others?
Bug work competes for limited development time, and the visible severity of an issue is only part of the decision. Fire Hose Games’ QA account emphasizes player impact, how many people encounter a problem, the availability of a workaround, and the effort and risk involved in fixing it.
| Question | Why it matters to the decision |
|---|---|
| How much does it harm play? | A cosmetic oddity is not equivalent to a crash or a blocked objective. The more a problem damages the player’s experience, the stronger the case for prioritizing it. |
| How often does it happen, and to how many players? | A rare issue affecting few players may rank below a widespread one with similar impact. Frequency alone is not enough: an uncommon failure can still be severe. |
| Does it add to the experience? | A surprising effect that suits the game’s tone may be worth preserving if it does not create substantial harm. |
| Is there a workaround? | A mitigation can reduce urgency, but it is not necessarily a permanent fix and may still leave players inconvenienced. |
| Can the team reproduce it? | An intermittent issue can be difficult to investigate. Reports, save files, and logs can help developers understand what happened. |
| Could the fix cause other problems? | Changes to interconnected systems can introduce regressions, so a team must weigh the benefit of a fix against the risk of creating another bug. |
| What else would the work displace? | As Fire Hose QA Director Rob put it, “Time spent fixing one bug is time not spent fixing another.” Time spent diagnosing, implementing, and checking a change has an opportunity cost. |
This is a prioritization framework, not a promise that every studio uses the same process or assigns the same weight to each factor. A team can agree that an issue is real and still decide that another fix is more important. Conversely, a funny result may be retained after the team has consciously evaluated it, rather than simply overlooked.
When is an unfixed bug not harmless?
“Harmless” should describe the effect on players, not just the developer’s intent or the fact that someone finds a glitch amusing. A bug that makes one person laugh might still prevent another from progressing or put saved progress at risk. The QA approach described by Fire Hose supports judging the actual player impact rather than applying a blanket rule.

Coffee Stain’s Goat Simulator statement itself draws a line between amusing bugs and crash bugs. Its example should not be used to excuse crashes, lost saves, inaccessible content, or substantial performance harm as ordinary comic roughness. A title can have a playful identity and still have faults that undermine its basic usability.
For players, a practical distinction is whether the behavior is an occasional oddity or a barrier to playing as intended. If it is a barrier, document the specific effect rather than assuming the developers consider it a feature. If the issue is intermittent, include whatever context is available—such as the circumstances, a save file, or logs—because those details can help an investigation. A workaround may help in the meantime, but it does not prove the underlying issue has been fixed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether a bug was kept on purpose?
Usually, the behavior alone is not enough to know. Stronger evidence is a developer or publisher statement that identifies the issue and explains the choice, as Coffee Stain did in the Goat Simulator description and postmortem. Without that kind of evidence, it is safer to say that an issue remains unfixed than to claim it was intentionally designed or celebrated.

Nor is there a reliable industry-wide percentage for how many bugs developers knowingly retain. The available examples establish that teams can make deliberate choices about unexpected behavior, not how common those choices are. A player’s interpretation may be reasonable, but it should not be presented as a confirmed design decision without a source.

The central distinction is simple: a bug describes an unexpected result; a design decision describes what a team chooses to do about it. Some unexpected results enrich a game, some are left temporarily because resources and risks have to be balanced, and some deserve prompt correction because they damage play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I report a funny glitch if it does not ruin the game?
Yes, if you want the developer to know about it; a report lets the team decide whether the behavior is harmless, useful, or a sign of a more serious problem. Describe what happened and the circumstances, rather than assuming the team has already seen it.
Does a funny bug become a feature if players like it?
Not automatically. Player enthusiasm may give a team a reason to preserve or refine an outcome, but “feature” implies a deliberate design choice; popularity alone does not establish that choice.

Why can developers fix one bug but leave a similar one in the game?
Two issues that look alike can differ in how often they occur, whom they affect, how difficult they are to reproduce, and what a fix might disrupt. Similar appearance does not guarantee similar technical causes or priority.
Is there a percentage of game bugs developers intentionally keep?
There is no established industry-wide percentage in the sources cited here. The documented examples explain why a team might keep a particular behavior, not how often studios make that decision.
