Denser internal layouts, slimmer hinges and display structures, improved battery energy density, and small weight savings across other components can make room for a larger cell. That does not mean every thinner foldable has a larger battery—or that more milliamp-hours automatically means longer battery life.
How can a foldable phone fit a larger battery?
A foldable is a tightly connected package: its two halves, hinge, flexible display, support layers, circuit boards, cooling hardware and batteries all compete for limited space and weight. Samsung executive Sunghoon Moon describes the design challenge this way: “With foldables, every component is interconnected. Making a device thinner, for example, means redesigning the display, hinge, battery, thermal system and internal architecture together.” [Samsung]
There are three broad ways to increase capacity without making the finished phone thicker: make the battery store more energy in a given volume, free up room by repackaging other parts, or recover enough weight elsewhere to offset a heavier battery. Manufacturers may use a combination of all three; no single technique explains every model.
Pack components more efficiently
Samsung says an ultra-high-density circuit board helps avoid wasted internal space. Its account of the Galaxy Z Flip7 also describes a 300 mAh capacity increase alongside a thinner battery. This illustrates how layout and packaging can change what fits, but it is not evidence that every foldable uses the same design or achieves the same result. [Samsung]

Redesign the hinge and display support
The hinge and flexible display need structural support, but their packaging can change. For the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung reports that the hinge was 27% thinner and 43% lighter than its predecessor, and that the display structure was reduced in thickness by more than 39% through panel restructuring and material changes. These are Samsung’s comparisons for its own models, not independently verified measurements or a universal foldable-phone specification. [Samsung]
Increase battery energy density
Energy density describes how much energy a battery stores for a given amount of space or weight. A cell with higher energy density can potentially hold more capacity without growing by the same proportion. Samsung says it introduced a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density, but also emphasizes that the battery system had to be optimized for stability. Anode material alone does not explain the capacity of a finished phone. [Samsung]

HONOR likewise attributes the Magic V6’s battery to its fifth-generation silicon-carbon material, developed with ATL. The company says the battery has 25% silicon content. Silicon-carbon is a manufacturer-described chemistry here; the stated percentage should not be treated as a direct measure of runtime or compared as though it were a standardized battery-performance score. Recover small amounts of weight across the phone
A larger battery adds mass, so engineers can offset it by trimming other parts. Samsung says its Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold7 both weigh 215 g and have similar overall dimensions, while reported capacity rises from 4,400 mAh to 5,000 mAh. Samsung attributes approximately 6 g of extra mass to the larger battery and says it looked for savings across the rest of the device. This illustrates why a phone’s battery compartment is not the only relevant space. Small reductions in several components can add up, and the remaining layout can then accommodate a larger cell without increasing the phone’s overall thickness or weight.

The Samsung comparison is useful for showing how the same stated weight can accompany a larger battery when mass is recovered elsewhere. The HONOR figures show a thin closed profile alongside a high stated capacity, but do not by themselves establish how the device achieves that packaging or how it compares in runtime with another brand. Model names, specifications and availability can differ by region.
Does a thinner foldable have better battery life?
Not necessarily. Milliamp-hours (mAh) indicate battery capacity, not how long a phone lasts in a particular person’s use. Endurance also depends on factors such as screen brightness, time spent using the larger inner display, processor workload, network conditions and software behavior. The cited manufacturer sources provide capacity figures and design explanations, not matched, independent runtime tests across these phones.
To compare battery life meaningfully, look for independent tests that use the same conditions and report the exact regional model or variant. A capacity figure or a thinner body can explain part of the design, but neither alone proves longer time between charges.
A separate battery demonstration is not an installed phone battery
HONOR has also described a blade-battery demonstration with 32% silicon content and more than 900 Wh/L, presenting it as technology intended to enable future foldables in the 7,000 mAh range. Those figures refer to a demonstration and a future-oriented target—not the battery HONOR says is installed in the Magic V6. [HONOR]
