Brief, relaxed twitching, paw paddling, eye movements, irregular breathing, or small sounds while a dog sleeps are commonly associated with REM sleep and dreaming. They do not reveal what the dog is dreaming about. Stiff, violent, prolonged, or unresponsive movements—or episodes followed by confusion, drooling, or loss of bladder or bowel control—need veterinary advice because a seizure or another medical problem may be involved.
Why does my dog twitch in their sleep?
Dogs can move their legs, twitch their muscles, shift their eyes behind closed lids, breathe shallowly or irregularly, and make small sounds during REM sleep. These behaviors are commonly associated with dreaming. A movement does not prove that a dog is dreaming, and it cannot tell you the dream’s content. If the dog otherwise appears relaxed and the movements are brief and intermittent, they are commonly part of sleep rather than, by themselves, evidence of illness. Do puppies and senior dogs twitch more?
Puppies and older dogs are described as twitching more than middle-aged dogs. One proposed explanation is that the brainstem’s usual inhibition of muscle movement during sleep may be developing in puppies or less efficient in older dogs. Is my dog dreaming or having a seizure?
There is no reliable home test that distinguishes every dream movement from a seizure. The pattern and the dog’s response and recovery can help you recognize when veterinary assessment is warranted, but they do not confirm a diagnosis.

AKC chief veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein contrasts dream-associated movement with seizure movement, which tends to be stiffer, more rigid, and more violent. Should I wake my dog up?
Do not touch or startle a twitching dog. A sleeping dog may react involuntarily and bite or scratch. If you need to wake them, call their name or make a noise from a safe distance; once they wake, reassure them. PetMD: Do Dogs Have Nightmares?
Why does my dog wake up at night?
Sleep movements and waking are different observations. The veterinary guidance cited here describes movements associated with REM sleep and advises attention to recurring or disruptive episodes; it does not establish one general cause for every dog that wakes at night. It may help to note when an episode occurs, how long it lasts, whether your dog responds, and how they behave afterward. Share those observations with your veterinarian; they are useful context, not a diagnostic test.
