The pink ball is used in day-night cricket because a traditional red ball can flare or become difficult to track under floodlights. But it does not stay equally visible in every phase of a match, and reports that it moves differently do not show that lights themselves cause the change. Background, time of day, ball wear, and the particular ball all matter.

Why day-night cricket uses a pink ball

Long-format cricket traditionally uses a red ball, but red can be hard to follow under artificial light. White balls are associated with limited-overs cricket, so trials explored a coloured ball that would remain visible for a longer-format match while retaining its colour through the period before a new ball is due. The Pakistan Cricket Board’s 2011 account quoted ICC general manager Dave Richardson saying the immediate aim was to establish whether the ball could sustain itself long enough in most conditions: PCB’s 2011 report.

Pink was therefore a practical compromise, not a promise of perfect visibility. Seeing a ball depends on its contrast with what is behind it, as well as lighting and the ball’s condition.

Why visibility changes during a match

Background and time of day

A ball may be easy to distinguish against one background and blend into another. A 2024 study measured balls and backgrounds at Lord’s and modelled luminance contrast against the pitch, grass, sightscreen, crowd, and sky across afternoon, dusk, and night conditions. In that model, an old pink ball could have little or no contrast against grass, pitch, and crowd; even a new pink ball could have low contrast against the crowd at dusk. These findings describe the measured Lord’s conditions, not every ground: the 2024 visibility study.

Wear and colour retention

The ball’s appearance changes as it wears. Early trials considered whether it could retain colour through the prescribed period before a new ball. Wear can also alter the surface, so a ball that was conspicuous when new may not provide the same contrast later. Cricket Australia’s 2014 report described trial feedback about external deterioration and concerns over softness and shape: Cricket Australia’s 2014 report.

Observers and tasks

Tracking a ball as an umpire, batter, fielder, or television viewer are different visual tasks. A 2021 study reported that professional umpires perceived pink-ball visibility as comparable with red in natural light and at dusk, and better at night. That is evidence about the umpires and conditions studied; it does not establish how every batter or fielder sees the ball: the 2021 umpire study.

Does a pink ball swing more under lights?

There is no basis in the cited trial account for saying that floodlights themselves make a pink ball swing. Swing and visibility are separate questions: lighting affects what players can see, while the ball’s surface and condition are relevant to how it behaves.

Cricket Australia’s 2014 report recounted trial feedback that the pink ball stopped swinging after six to eight overs, once its initial lacquer wore off. That was a participant observation about a particular trial, not a controlled estimate or a rule for every pink ball. The report also discussed wear varying across playing surfaces and concerns about softness and shape. Its stated aim, in the words of then-chief executive James Sutherland, was to keep improving the ball so it behaved as closely as possible to the red ball. The account does not isolate lighting as the cause of the reported change.

How pink compares with red and white for visibility

No ball colour is guaranteed to be easiest to see in all conditions. The Lord’s modelling found situations in which pink had low contrast, while other research discussed visibility challenges for red and white balls under some combinations of background and lighting. A fair comparison therefore depends on the ball’s age, the background, the phase of the day-night transition, the lighting, and who is trying to track it. The available results support a conditional explanation rather than a universal ranking.

What to take from reports that it “behaves differently”

The phrase can refer to two distinct experiences: difficulty seeing the ball, or a change in its movement as it wears. Visibility evidence shows that contrast can vary with background, light, and ball age; the historical trial report records feedback about swing and wear for the balls used there. Neither establishes a single effect that applies to every venue, player, or pink ball. In particular, a ball seeming harder to track under lights does not by itself show that its physical movement has changed.
