The washing machine’s final “minute” is an estimate, not a promise that the cycle will finish in exactly 60 seconds. Near the end, the washer may be redistributing laundry, retrying the final spin, draining water, or adjusting the cycle because of suds or other conditions. One slow finish can be normal; repeated delays with standing water, very wet clothes, strong vibration, or an error code call for troubleshooting.
Why the timer can stall at one minute
A washer estimates how long a cycle will take, and the estimate can change as the machine responds to the load and conditions. Whirlpool says its remaining-time display can account for load size and type, cycle and options, household water temperature and pressure, and whether it detects an unbalanced load. Its display may hold steady or even reach zero before the cycle is actually complete when suds or imbalance disrupt the expected timing. These details describe Whirlpool guidance, not a universal algorithm shared by every washer. Whirlpool Product Help
What may be happening at the end of the cycle
The washer is balancing the load for its final spin
Final spin is a common reason for a stationary last-minute display. If laundry gathers on one side of the drum, the washer may slow down, tumble the items to redistribute them, and try spinning again. A single bulky item, such as bedding or a rug, a very small load, or a mix of fabrics with different weights can make balancing difficult. LG: Why Does My Washing Machine Take So Long to Spin? LG: Washing machine drum not spinning
Suds have triggered extra rinsing or a slower spin
Too much detergent, or detergent not intended for a high-efficiency (HE) washer, can create excess foam. Depending on the model, the machine may add water or rinses, extend the cycle, or reduce spin speed. Miele describes automatic load control that checks how much water laundry has absorbed; foam can add rinse time or an extra rinse. A Bosch owner manual likewise describes foam detection adding a rinse. Use the detergent type and dose specified in your own washer’s manual rather than adding more when the timer appears stuck. The washer is heating water or taking longer to fill
A sanitize or steam cycle may need more time to heat water, particularly when the incoming water is cold. On a rinse or fill stage, low water pressure, a kinked inlet hose, or dirty inlet filters can slow progress. An extra-rinse option also adds time. Drainage is slowing the spin stage
A pinched drain hose or clogged drain filter can delay spinning. Thick fabrics and larger loads can also take longer to absorb water and drain. If water remains in the drum, check the hose for an obvious kink; clean a filter only by following the instructions for your exact model, since its location and access procedure vary. What to check when the final minute keeps stretching
- Look at the load. If items are bunched, the load is a single heavy piece, or the drum is unusually full or nearly empty, redistribute or resize it. Pause the washer only if the manual permits, and use a model-appropriate cycle for bulky items such as blankets or padded garments. Then restart the appropriate spin step if your washer allows it. LG: Washing machine drum not spinning
- Consider detergent and foam. For the next load, use the detergent type and measured dose recommended in the manual. Do not add more detergent because the display is stalled. Whirlpool Product Help
- Check for drainage problems. If water remains or spin is repeatedly delayed, inspect the drain hose for kinks. Follow the model’s instructions before cleaning a filter or moving hoses. LG: Why Does My Washing Machine Take So Long to Spin?
- Respond to shaking or thumping. Check that the washer is level and stable using the method in its manual. LG advises checking the level and adjusting a foot when the machine shakes. LG: Washing machine drum not spinning
- Look for a repeated pattern. Note whether the delay occurs during heating, filling, draining, or final spin, and whether it comes with suds, retained water, vibration, or an error code. If the same problem recurs across ordinary loads, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support or service guidance instead of diagnosing a failed part from the timer alone. When a long finish is a warning sign
There is no single number of minutes that separates normal behavior from a fault for every washer. Timing depends on the model, selected program, load, and household water conditions. A delay on its own does not identify a failed component. Persistent retained water, recurring error codes, abnormal vibration, or repeated trouble across varied normal loads are stronger reasons to consult the model manual and contact the manufacturer’s support or service route.
