If your YouTube lofi radio stream loses audio after a few hours, the elapsed time alone does not identify the cause or prove YouTube imposed a time limit. Find the point where sound disappears: the music source, encoder, local recording, YouTube ingest, or only some viewers. Compare those observations with the timestamped messages in YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings.

First, find where the audio disappears

During or shortly after the next cutoff, check the source application, the encoder’s audio meter, a local recording, and what viewers hear. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting recommends checking how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder and reviewing a local archive for problems (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

What you observe What to check next
The source stops playing, or its encoder meter goes flat Investigate the playback application, audio capture or routing, selected playback device, and whether the computer or application went to sleep. These are diagnostic possibilities, not a confirmed cause; the available evidence does not identify a particular lofi player or sleep setting as responsible.
The source and meter appear active, but the local recording and broadcast are silent Check the encoder’s selected audio output or mix, its logs, and YouTube’s health messages. Confirm that the stream has one supported audio stream and no more than two audio channels.
The local recording contains sound, but viewers report silence or interruptions Check YouTube stream health and the encoder’s connection indicators. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer, people on the same network, or viewers on different networks.
Only one viewer reports silence Check that viewer’s device, browser or app, playback settings, and connection. If viewers sharing a network are affected, investigate that network; reports across separate networks make a stream or encoder issue more plausible.

A local recording helps separate a problem in the source or encoder output from one that appears farther along the delivery path. Note the cutoff time and compare it with the archive and the encoder’s indicators as close to that moment as possible.

Read YouTube’s health messages at the cutoff time

Open the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and look at the health indicator around the time sound failed. YouTube timestamps health errors and marks their severity; unresolved errors can remain visible. Messages may identify no audio, multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, an incorrect audio sample rate or bitrate, or too many audio channels (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

YouTube’s error guidance describes H.264 video with AAC audio for the cited stream configuration, and lists AAC or MP3 in its detailed audio-codec messages. In the context of the listed errors, it recommends an audio bitrate of 128 Kbps and a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Check the exact message for your stream and verify the encoder’s actual settings; a warning about bitrate or sample rate is relevant when it appears, not proof that either setting caused an unrelated dropout. YouTube’s Live Streaming API uses labels including noAudioStream, multipleAudioStreams, and audioCodec, as well as labels for audio bitrate, sample rate, channel, and primary/backup mismatch issues (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams).

If the encoder and archive have sound, check the connection

If the encoder output and local recording contain audio while viewers experience a disruption, inspect connection and delivery indicators rather than immediately changing audio settings. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, choosing stream quality suited to the connection, running a representative test, and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

  • Check the encoder for dropped frames, connection warnings, or other network indicators at the failure time.
  • Judge whether upload capacity is stable enough for the configured stream, not just whether a speed test briefly reaches a high result.
  • If you are on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet as a controlled test. A wired connection may help with Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot fix a stopped source or incorrect audio routing.
  • Change one variable at a time. If the connection is unstable or the configured bitrate exceeds what it can sustain, OBS recommends trying a lower video bitrate that remains appropriate for the service and stable upload capacity.
  • If problems persist, check VPN or security software, network drivers, router or modem connectivity, and cables or other network hardware. OBS recommends contacting your ISP if local checks do not resolve connection problems.

OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable remote connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; enough dropped frames may disconnect a stream. Its statement that dropped frames are “extremely unlikely” to be caused by OBS Studio refers specifically to dropped frames, not every possible audio failure (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

Test the whole lofi setup before the next long stream

Run a test using audio and video activity representative of the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube specifically advises that tests include audio and movement similar to what will be in the stream (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

  1. Record the encoder, software version, operating system, audio source, and routing or mix in use.
  2. Test the source, encoder meter, and local recording together; confirm each contains sound.
  3. Review YouTube health messages and note their timestamps, severity, and exact wording.
  4. Monitor network indicators during the test and compare them with any reports of silence.
  5. If you cannot find a problem in the current output or archive, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder as a controlled test. Change only the encoder for that comparison so the result is meaningful.
