A 504 means a gateway or proxy did not receive a response from an upstream service in time. For a screenshot request, that upstream may be the screenshot provider, its browser renderer, the target website or one of the page’s dependencies—or a service on the network path. The status alone cannot tell you which one failed, so start by identifying the component that returned it.
What a 504 means in a screenshot workflow
HTTP 504 is a gateway-timeout response: a server acting as a gateway or proxy did not get a timely response from an upstream server. MDN’s 504 reference describes the status, but it does not identify the specific upstream or explain why that component was slow.
A screenshot request can cross several timing boundaries: your client’s timeout, an API gateway or proxy, the screenshot service’s application, its browser renderer, and the target page plus its external resources. The relevant deadline might be a provider-wide render limit, a browser navigation timeout, or an application/backend deadline. A 504 does not by itself prove that the target website is down.
Find which layer returned the timeout
- Capture the response details. Record the status, response body or error code, response headers, request ID, elapsed time, target URL, and rendering options. Do not infer the source from the status code alone.
- Compare elapsed time with documented limits. Check the specific provider’s navigation and overall render timeouts, along with any client or gateway deadlines you control. Providers differ in limits and in how they report renderer saturation, quota exhaustion, rate limiting, and page-render failures. For examples of provider-specific behavior, consult the Screenshot API documentation and the Screenshot API REST API reference.
- Run a controlled comparison. Retry the same target with the same options, then try a simple public page using the same API settings. If the simple page succeeds while the original fails, the target or its dependencies may be contributing to the delay. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof: provider-side or network problems can still affect individual requests.
- Check provider diagnostics. Review rate-limit and quota headers, account allowance, any request-status details, and provider guidance on failed renders. An API may distinguish a page failure from saturation, quota exhaustion, or throttling; those meanings are not universal.
- If you control the gateway or backend, follow the latency. Inspect gateway integration status and latency, backend processing time, resource availability, and network delays. AWS recommends enabling and checking API Gateway logs and examining integration status and latency; Microsoft lists backend processing time, resource exhaustion, and network delays among possible Azure Application Gateway causes. The applicable timeout settings depend on the named product and configuration. See AWS’s API Gateway 504 guidance and Microsoft’s Azure Application Gateway troubleshooting guide.
Adjust the page wait without losing needed content
Pages that depend on JavaScript, API calls, animations, or numerous external resources can take longer to reach a chosen wait condition. Waiting for all network activity to stop may be unnecessarily strict for a screenshot whose required content is already visible. Provider options vary, so use the conditions documented for your service.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the provider supports it, try an earlier navigation condition rather than waiting for all network activity to become idle.
- Where the screenshot needs a particular component, wait for a selector that marks that content instead of waiting for unrelated page activity.
- Avoid adding a long fixed delay unless the page genuinely needs it. Verify that the desired content has appeared before accepting a shorter wait.
Provider documentation illustrates different available controls: for example, Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint documentation describes its request options, while RenderScreenshot’s troubleshooting documentation covers its own errors. These examples are not universal settings or limits; check the API and plan you actually use.
Should you increase the timeout?
Increase a deadline only when the operation legitimately needs more time and the relevant service permits it. A larger timeout may prevent a premature cutoff, but it does not make a slow backend, overloaded renderer, or delayed network path faster. AWS documents a possible timeout increase for some API Gateway REST API configurations while also recommending reducing runtime. Microsoft’s guidance likewise treats persistent 504s as potentially related to backend or network delays. Those are product-specific examples, not general screenshot API defaults.

Before changing a limit, identify which component enforces it and whether it is the first deadline reached. If a client gives up before the provider’s render deadline, increasing only the provider setting will not help. Conversely, a provider-side deadline cannot be extended by changing your local client timeout.
Retry only when a repeat request makes sense
A bounded retry can help with a transient network or provider issue, but repeated retries are not a diagnosis. Confirm that repeating the request is safe, follow the provider’s retry guidance, and honor a Retry-After header if supplied. Check whether failed renders count toward your quota before building automated retries. Stop retrying persistent failures and investigate the timing boundary instead.

What to send when escalating
Give the provider or site operator enough evidence to trace the request, but remove secrets before sharing.
- Request ID and timestamp, including timezone.
- Target URL and screenshot options, with cookies and authorization values redacted.
- Exact status, response body or error code, relevant headers, and elapsed time.
- Whether a simple comparison URL succeeded, and any gateway/backend latency or log evidence you control.
Do not send API keys, session cookies, or authorization headers in an unredacted support request. Provider support procedures differ; RenderScreenshot’s troubleshooting page is one example of documentation that requests request and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 504 mean the target website is down?
No. It means a gateway or proxy did not get a timely upstream response; the status alone does not identify the upstream or establish that the target site is down.
Can I tell the source of the 504 from the status code alone?
No. Use the response body and headers, request ID, elapsed time, provider limits, and available gateway or backend telemetry to locate the timing boundary.
