A blank screenshot is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check whether the browser actually loaded the page; if it did, investigate whether the screenshot was captured, returned, and interpreted correctly. Those are separate failure points, and reports document configuration-specific problems rather than one universal cause.
Trace the failure from page load to image display
Follow the stages in order. Avoid changing browser settings or versions until you know which stage failed.
- Page state: Did navigation reach the expected URL, and does the page contain content?
- Capture: Did the screenshot tool generate an image, or did it stop before capture?
- Return: Did the tool send image content inline, save a file, or omit the image?
- Interpretation: Does the client accept the returned image’s format and size?
Check whether the browser page is really blank
After navigation, use the MCP server’s supported page-inspection tools to read the current URL and inspect a snapshot or the page DOM. Compare the result with the URL you intended to open.
- If the URL is
about:blankor the page body is empty, focus first on navigation, active tab or page selection, session state, and the browser connection. - If the expected URL and page content are present in a snapshot, but the image is blank or missing, focus on capture and response handling instead.
In one Chrome DevTools MCP issue report, navigation appeared successful while window.location.href remained about:blank, the body length was zero, and the screenshot was blank. The reporter said manual headless Chrome rendered the same sites. The report’s suggestions about a wrong page target or a navigation/load race were hypotheses, not confirmed causes; that comparison is useful for isolating the reported setup, not a guaranteed fix. Read the Chrome DevTools MCP issue.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find out what the screenshot tool returned
Inspect the full tool result and the tool’s arguments. Determine whether it contains inline image content, a saved-file path, an explicit omission setting, or an error. A successful navigation response does not prove that a screenshot was generated or delivered to the client.
For Playwright MCP, the official documentation says that when filename is omitted, the image is also returned inline in the tool response; it also documents --image-responses=omit, which keeps images out of the response. Confirm the behavior and configuration of your own MCP server and client rather than assuming every server returns screenshots the same way. See the Playwright MCP documentation.

Check output-path arguments and tool schema
Check the actual argument sent by the client, not just what the interface appears to show. An absent path and an empty string are not necessarily equivalent: a server may treat an omitted optional argument differently from a client that sends filePath: "".
A Chrome DevTools MCP issue describes an empty filePath being validated as a path and rejected before screenshot capture. The reporter said omitting the output path had previously returned a PNG inline. This is a report about a particular setup, not proof that all clients behave this way. Inspect the tool schema and try omitting the path entirely if inline output is what you want. See the path-validation report.

Verify the image format when the page renders
If page inspection shows the expected content, but the client rejects the image or reports corrupted data, compare the image’s actual encoding with the media type declared in the tool response. Also check the installed server and client versions before changing either.
A Playwright MCP issue for v0.0.47 reports an image/jpeg media-type mismatch and a client/API 400 error even though the file was reportedly saved. The author suspected a PNG/JPEG metadata mismatch and reported v0.0.42 working in their setup. Those are user-submitted observations, not a verified general root cause or a universal reason to downgrade. Check your own payload and versions first. Read the Playwright MCP issue.

Reduce capture scope if an inline image is too large
Large full-page screenshots can exceed the inline-response limits of a particular service. Microsoft Playwright Workspaces documents a 768 KiB limit for inline screenshot base64 data and recommends JPEG, viewport capture, or element-level capture for oversized screenshots. That limit applies to Playwright Workspaces; other services and MCP clients may have different limits. See Microsoft’s visual-verification guidance.
- Try a viewport screenshot instead of a full-page capture.
- Capture only the element you need, if the server supports it.
- Use JPEG if supported and suitable for your use case.
Use page inspection and screenshots together
Playwright MCP documents interactions based on the page’s accessibility tree, which returns structured roles and text; screenshots provide visual verification. Compare both outputs to narrow down the failure:

| Page inspection | Screenshot result | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Expected content is present | Blank, missing, or rejected | Capture arguments, inline-versus-file output, omission configuration, image encoding and size, and client handling. |
| URL or content is empty or unexpected | Blank or unrelated image | Navigation, active page or tab, session state, and browser connection. |
| Expected content is present | File exists, but client reports an error | Compare the file’s actual format with its declared media type and check the versions involved. |
Common errors and what to try
| Symptom | Likely stage | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Navigation says it succeeded, but URL is about:blank |
Page state | Inspect the active page and current URL; verify page or tab selection and browser connection. |
| Screenshot fails before producing an image | Capture arguments | Check whether the client sent an empty path rather than omitting the optional path. |
| Tool result has no inline image | Return configuration | Check filename behavior and whether image responses are configured to be omitted. |
| File is saved, but the client returns a 400 or rejects it | Image interpretation | Compare encoded format with declared media type; check server and client versions. |
| Only large full-page captures fail inline | Response size | Try viewport or element capture; check the limit for your specific service. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots without managing a browser runtime, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes one GET request with a URL; the output can be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a quick API check, use this cURL example (replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a successful navigation message prove the page loaded?
No. Check the active URL and page content after navigation; a success message alone does not establish that the intended page is active.
Does the 768 KiB screenshot limit apply to every MCP server?
No. Microsoft documents that limit for Playwright Workspaces. Other services and clients may set different inline-response limits.
