Your TV usually switches to Game Mode because the PS5 signals that you’re playing a game. On compatible TVs, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) uses that signal to select a low-latency picture mode, often called Game Mode. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault.
Why the PS5 triggers Game Mode
ALLM is designed to reduce input lag during gameplay. Sony says the PS5 sends a signal to the TV while you’re playing, and the TV can respond by enabling its low-latency mode. TV makers may use a different name for that mode, so check your TV’s manual if you don’t see a setting called Game Mode. Sony’s PS5 resolution support page and its PS5 features page describe the behavior.
The TV may behave differently when you open a media app: Sony says the PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running.
How to stop the PS5 from switching modes
- On the PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM.
- Set ALLM to Off. Sony says the latest PS5 system software is required for the documented setting.
- If the TV still enters low-latency mode, check the PS5’s VRR setting. Sony notes that low-latency mode can still activate when VRR output is in use, even with ALLM set to Off.
- To disable that behavior completely, turn off VRR as well as ALLM. This may mean giving up VRR, so decide whether automatic low latency or your preferred TV mode matters more to you.
If Game Mode still activates, check TV compatibility
ALLM support and menu labels vary by TV model. HDMI 2.1 branding by itself does not guarantee that a television supports ALLM. Check the manual for your exact model or contact the manufacturer to confirm support and whether the TV has its own automatic low-latency control.

When to check the HDMI cable or port
A cable change is not the usual fix if you simply prefer a different picture mode. For signal or compatibility troubleshooting, Sony recommends the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable; connect the console to a compatible HDMI 2.1 port where available. Sony gives this cable and port guidance in a broader 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting context, so these checks are not a guaranteed fix for every ALLM issue.
