The cause depends on where your encoder runs and what fails when the stream drops. A rising network-dropped-frame count in OBS points to a problem somewhere between the encoder and YouTube’s ingest server, but it does not identify whether the host, network, route, or ingest endpoint is responsible. If viewers lose playback while the encoder and YouTube still show a healthy incoming stream, investigate playback separately. Start by recording what happens at the exact time of a disconnect; do not assume Oracle Cloud is at fault just because it is in the title.
First identify which connection is failing
“Oracle Cloud YouTube livestream” can describe different setups. OBS or another encoder may run on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine, on a local computer that sends video to YouTube, or on another host. OCI may also be unrelated to the actual stream path. The right troubleshooting steps depend on that distinction.

Keep the services distinct: YouTube Live Control Room supplies the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming is a separate Oracle service, not a YouTube ingest endpoint. Oracle’s documented ports for its Streaming service are not universal YouTube Live ports. Capture evidence when the stream drops
Before changing settings, note the time and collect observations from both ends of the stream. A single symptom rarely establishes a cause.

- In OBS or your encoder, record whether it says it is disconnected or reconnecting, the network-dropped-frame count, output bitrate, and any relevant log message.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and messages at the same time.
- Note whether the video and audio look and sound normal inside the encoder preview, and whether encoder CPU load is unusually high.
- Record whether viewers alone report a problem, and whether their reports come from a shared network.
If network-dropped frames climb as the connection or bitrate falters, focus on the outbound path. If the encoder stays connected and YouTube reports a healthy feed, viewer playback is a different diagnostic branch.
Check upload capacity from the encoder’s actual location
Download speed does not show whether the stream’s outbound connection can hold steady. Run an upload test from the machine and network that send the stream, ideally during a representative period. Compare sustained upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and account for other traffic such as backups, cloud uploads, VPN overhead, other streams, and other users.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions; a shared office or household connection can constrain one stream even if the connection looks fast overall. (YouTube streaming tips) If the link cannot sustain the target with margin, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and repeat a realistic test.
Verify the YouTube URL, key, and protocol
- Open the relevant event in YouTube Live Control Room and copy its current stream URL and stream key.
- Check that the encoder is using the URL and key for that event, with no stale or mistyped values.
- Confirm that the encoder is configured for the intended protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube says to verify that the protocol and server are
rtmps; if needed, try port 443. For a connection timeout, check that the URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS. (YouTube connection troubleshooting)
Do not replace YouTube’s displayed ingest endpoint with an Oracle Streaming endpoint or assume Oracle Streaming’s ports apply to YouTube.

Inspect the route that actually carries the stream
If the encoder runs in an OCI virtual machine
Check that the VM has a working outbound internet route. Review its host firewall, the relevant OCI VCN security lists and network security groups, and any VPN or intermediary network on the path. These controls matter only if the encoder’s traffic actually traverses OCI.
Oracle documents hanging-connection cases involving Path MTU Discovery and fragment handling for certain VCN-to-on-premises paths. Consider that possibility only if your stream follows a matching network architecture; it is not a general explanation for YouTube disconnections. Oracle’s separate Streaming service connectivity guidance concerns that service’s own endpoints and API/SDK or Kafka use cases, including ports 443 and 9092—not generic YouTube ingest configuration. If the encoder runs on a local computer
OCI VCN rules may not be involved at all. Inspect the local host’s network, VPN, security software, router or ISP path, and the route to YouTube. OBS notes that VPN or security software can interfere with streaming. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends leaving IP binding at Default; IPv4-only can be tested as a diagnostic, but if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6. (OBS connection troubleshooting)
Check encoder settings and workload
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as a reference rather than choosing a bitrate without knowing your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate ranges vary by codec, output resolution, and frame rate, so consult the live settings table for the format you use. (YouTube recommended encoder settings)

- If video or audio is already wrong in the encoder preview, check source routing and encoder load, including CPU usage.
- If local output looks healthy but outbound telemetry fails, prioritize the connection and ingest path.
- If the configured bitrate exceeds what the sending connection can sustain with headroom, lower it and test again.
Run a realistic test, then escalate with useful details
Before a broadcast, YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing any messages. A static test image or silent feed may not represent the workload of the real broadcast. (YouTube streaming tips)
- Run the test from the same encoder and network that will carry the live stream.
- Watch encoder connection statistics and YouTube stream health together.
- If outbound capacity appears inadequate or the route is unstable, contact the ISP with the timestamps and observed symptoms.
- If an OCI-hosted encoder still fails after checking its route and firewall, give the relevant support team timestamps, encoder logs, route details, and YouTube health messages.
