This message means the Wi-Fi network is using a wireless security type that your Nintendo Switch model does not support. The original Switch and Switch 2 support different security types, so check your console model and your router’s current security setting before changing anything.
What the error means
Nintendo says the message appears when the network you are trying to join uses an unsupported wireless security type. The full message reads: “This Network’s Settings Are Not Supported. Please Choose a Different Network.” This points to compatibility between the router’s Wi-Fi security setting and the console—not, by itself, a general internet outage. Nintendo Support’s explanation of this error covers both Switch models.

Check which wireless security types your console supports
Compare the security type selected on the router with the list for your console. Nintendo gives these supported types:
| Console | Supported wireless security types |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | WEP; WPA-PSK (AES); WPA2-PSK (AES) |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | WPA-PSK (AES); WPA2-PSK (AES); WPA3-SAE (AES) |
These are Nintendo’s listed types for the exact error. In particular, WPA3-SAE (AES) appears in the Switch 2 list, not the original Switch list. Nintendo’s original Switch connection guide also lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies and 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac modes; those details do not change the model-specific security lists above. See Nintendo’s original Switch wireless connection guide.

How to troubleshoot the unsupported-settings message
- Identify your console. Decide whether you are connecting an original Nintendo Switch or a Switch 2, since their supported security types differ.
- Check the router’s Wi-Fi security type. Look in the router’s settings or documentation for the wireless security setting, then compare it with the applicable list above.
- Ask for help changing the setting if it is incompatible. Nintendo recommends contacting your internet service provider or network administrator. Router controls vary by model, so use the router’s manual or manufacturer support for device-specific instructions; Nintendo does not give one universal menu path.
- Reconnect affected devices if the setting changes. Other devices already using the Wi-Fi network may also need their security settings updated after a change.
If the network name is grayed out or does not appear
On the original Switch, Nintendo says a grayed-out network name in Internet Settings indicates an unsupported security type. Nintendo’s wireless setup instructions describe this clue.
If the network name is missing rather than producing the unsupported-settings message, that is a separate connection issue. Nintendo’s guidance for a Switch that cannot find a wireless network recommends checking whether the network is discoverable and whether its security is compatible. If it remains unavailable, contact your ISP, network administrator, or router manufacturer. Read Nintendo’s steps for a Switch that cannot find a wireless network.

What not to change first
Nintendo’s stated cause for this exact message is an unsupported Wi-Fi security type, and its recommended route is to check or change that router setting with appropriate help. Its guidance does not identify rebooting the router, changing DNS, buying a new router, or adding an adapter as the fix for this error.
