If your Lenovo laptop keeps turning itself off, the cause depends on when it happens: after unplugging, while it is hot, during Windows startup, or during a particular task. Check the pattern first, then follow the matching steps below. A shutdown by itself does not prove the battery or another component has failed.
Record when the shutdown happens
Before changing settings or buying parts, note whether the laptop turns off on battery, while connected to AC power, when it feels hot, during Windows startup, or while doing a particular task. Also note the displayed battery percentage, any warning, a recent Windows or driver update, and whether you recently changed chargers. These clues help select a troubleshooting path but do not identify a failed component on their own.
- Only after unplugging or on battery: check battery status and compare operation on AC power.
- When the laptop feels hot: check airflow and workload.
- When Windows is accessible: start with restart and update checks.
- During Windows loading or shutdown/hibernate: confirm the exact model and software configuration before considering a driver-specific fix.
If Windows is still usable, start with basic software checks
Save open work before restarting or shutting down. Lenovo’s general first steps are to restart the computer and install Windows updates; if the issue continues, check Lenovo software and drivers. Use Lenovo’s First steps for solving computer problems guidance as the general starting point.
- Save your files and restart the laptop.
- Install available Windows updates, then check whether the shutdown recurs.
- If it does, check Lenovo software and drivers for the exact model. Identify the machine through Lenovo’s device information or support tools before downloading model-specific software.
If it turns off on battery or after unplugging
Check whether the laptop remains on when connected to AC power. If the shutdown happens only after removing power, or the laptop turns off while the charge indicator still shows power remaining, battery status is a useful next check. Lenovo recommends reviewing battery details in Lenovo Vantage; Windows can also generate a battery report with powercfg /batteryreport. Lenovo’s Battery Q&A, battery troubleshooting guidance, and ideapad guidance for shutdowns after removing power describe these checks.

A worn or faulty battery is one possible explanation, not a conclusion from the symptom alone. Do not order a replacement until diagnostics support that decision and you have confirmed the compatible part for your exact model. If Lenovo’s power and battery checks do not resolve the problem, use Lenovo support; its ThinkPad no-power and battery troubleshooting page provides a relevant support path.
If the laptop feels hot before it shuts down
Check whether vents are blocked and whether the computer is sitting on a soft surface that could restrict airflow. Lenovo recommends placing the PC on a hard, flat surface and closing CPU-intensive applications. With the PC off, clear vent lint, dust, or debris with compressed air. These steps address airflow and workload; they do not establish that heat is the cause or guarantee that shutdowns will stop. See Lenovo’s guidance on what to check if a PC seems warm.

If the problem happens while Windows loads or during shutdown/hibernate
First identify the exact Lenovo model, Windows version, and whether a recent driver change or managed Windows deployment is involved. Lenovo documents a narrow driver-related issue for ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 and X13 Gen 2 systems running Windows 10 installed through SCCM or similar deployment methods with Lenovo driver packs. In that defined configuration, Lenovo’s article checks for an ELAN or Synaptics SMBus driver and describes restoring the Intel SMBus/chipset driver.

This is not a general fix for Lenovo laptops. Do not force-delete or replace drivers based on the model family alone; confirm that the machine and Windows deployment match Lenovo’s documented case, and follow the specific ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 and X13 Gen 2 instructions only when they apply.

Contact Lenovo support if its relevant battery, power, or heat checks do not solve the shutdowns, or if you cannot establish that a model-specific software fix applies. Have the exact model, Windows version, shutdown timing, battery percentage, AC-versus-battery behavior, and any recent update or charger change ready. Lenovo notes that some ThinkPad troubleshooting steps may not apply to every computer, so model-specific instructions matter.
