It is a normal sharing feature, not by itself a sign of a fault or intrusion. The notification asks for your approval: choose Share Password only if you intend to let that device join the network.
What triggers the Wi-Fi Password notification?
The other person selects your Wi-Fi network on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. That device sends a request over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE); a nearby, awake Apple device that has the network password can respond. The sharing iPhone must be unlocked and connected to the network.
Apple lists these conditions for its sharing flow:
- Both devices are nearby, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- The people using the devices are signed in to their Apple Accounts, and each has the other’s Apple Account email address or phone number saved in Contacts.
- Personal Hotspot is off on either device.
- The sharing iPhone is unlocked and connected to the Wi-Fi network being requested.
Apple’s security documentation says the sharing device checks the requester’s identity before sending the password. However, the notification itself does not tell you which person or device initiated that particular request. Apple also does not give a specific distance for this feature, so there is no reliable distance threshold to use when judging an alert.
What should you do when the request keeps appearing?
If you do not want to grant network access, leave the request unapproved. Apple’s instructions require tapping Share Password to send it. If someone nearby is repeatedly trying to join, ask them to stop selecting the network; another attempt can prompt another notification.

If you do intend to share, check the setup in this order:
- Make sure both devices have current software, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, and Personal Hotspot is off.
- Check that each person’s Apple Account email address or phone number is saved in the other person’s Contacts.
- Keep the devices nearby, and make sure the sharing iPhone is unlocked and connected to the requested Wi-Fi network.
- If sharing still fails, restart both devices. The person joining can enter the Wi-Fi password manually instead.
Apple’s support guidance does not document a separate setting for disabling only incoming Wi-Fi password-sharing requests. Ask to Join Networks controls notifications about available Wi-Fi networks when no known network is in range, while Auto-Join Hotspot controls automatic connections to nearby Personal Hotspots. Neither setting is documented as a way to suppress a Share Password request.

Should you share, ignore, or enter the password manually?

Is this the same as Personal Hotspot?
No. Wi-Fi password sharing lets another Apple device join a Wi-Fi network. Personal Hotspot shares your iPhone’s cellular internet connection. Apple says an iPhone cannot join a Wi-Fi network and then share that same Wi-Fi connection onward through its hotspot. If the alert is about joining or setting up a hotspot, troubleshoot Personal Hotspot separately.
