A black YouTube stream from an Amazon EC2 instance can come from the captured source, the encoder, the connection to YouTube, or playback. The fastest way to narrow it down is to compare the picture at each stage: the source on EC2, the encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and the viewer playback. The first stage where the picture disappears tells you where to investigate; the title alone does not identify a single cause.
Find the first place the picture turns black
Check each stage independently rather than changing settings at random. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream audio and video quality (YouTube: Fix common live streaming issues).
- EC2 source: Is the intended desktop, game, window, browser, or media actually visible on the instance?
- Encoder preview: Does the encoder show the picture you expect?
- YouTube preview: Does the Live Control Room show video, and what does stream health report?
- Published playback: Does the public or unlisted stream remain black when the Control Room preview looks correct?
Also note whether audio continues and whether a local recording or archive has video. Those observations help separate a source/capture problem from an ingest or playback problem. If the encoder preview is healthy but YouTube is not, YouTube identifies outbound connectivity as one possible issue; that is a diagnostic possibility, not proof of the cause in a particular EC2 setup.
If the EC2 source or encoder preview is black
Verify the selected source and scene
Confirm that the intended display, game, window, browser, or media source is enabled and selected in the encoder scene. Check that the source points to the correct target and that it is visible in the scene. If the source itself is not visible on the EC2 desktop, resolve that before investigating YouTube ingest.

If you use OBS Game Capture, follow OBS’s specific guidance for a blank Game Capture source (OBS: Game Capture source). If you use display capture with multiple graphics adapters, OBS documents adapter-related capture issues and capture-method options; that guidance is platform- and version-specific (OBS: macOS Screen Capture). Do not apply advice for a particular operating system to an EC2 instance running a different one.
Check the instance GPU and driver combination
If your instance uses a GPU, verify its exact EC2 instance type, operating system, and installed driver. AWS notes that GPU instances need appropriate drivers and documents driver choices by instance family and operating system (AWS: Install NVIDIA drivers on Linux instances; AWS: Accelerated computing instances). A generic symptom cannot determine which driver category is right, and changing drivers is not guaranteed to fix a capture-source problem.

If the encoder is black, degraded, or reporting errors
When the encoder preview is wrong, investigate the source routed into it and the encoder itself before changing YouTube settings. YouTube recommends checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, looking for encoder errors on the live dashboard, checking CPU load, and updating encoder software (YouTube: Fix common live streaming issues). A local recording can help establish whether the encoder is receiving the expected picture.
Distinguish a black source from a performance problem
OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. If the output is choppy or OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce unnecessary scene work and check for other GPU-heavy programs. Simplify complex scenes and consider lowering source resolution where appropriate (OBS: Encoding performance troubleshooting; OBS: What is OBS Studio and how to use it). These are useful performance checks, but overload messages alone do not prove why a picture is black.

If the encoder preview is good but YouTube is black
Check the Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information, then inspect the outbound connection from the EC2 environment. YouTube says a healthy encoder stream paired with a bad stream can point to an outbound internet connectivity issue (YouTube: Fix common live streaming issues). Avoid changing capture sources blindly when the encoder already shows the right picture.
If the stream will not start at all, check that the encoder is configured with the current YouTube stream key and matching stream settings. YouTube’s start-error guidance recommends replacing a stale or invalid key when the key is the problem (YouTube: Fix encoder stream issues). YouTube recommends testing settings before an event, monitoring stream health, and using RTMPS where supported (YouTube: Fix common live streaming issues).

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers (YouTube: Fix common live streaming issues). If local encoder video and the Control Room preview look good but public playback is black, treat playback as a separate diagnostic stage: compare another player or device and recheck the live stream’s status rather than assuming the EC2 capture is at fault.

- EC2 instance type and operating system
- Encoder name and version
- Capture source type and the stage where video first becomes black
- GPU model and driver version, if applicable
- Whether audio continues, the encoder reports errors, and a local recording contains video
AWS driver guidance depends on instance family and operating system; capture troubleshooting depends on the encoder, source, and platform. Without those details, a precise driver recommendation or command would be guesswork.
