A screenshot can show an old page because it captured a stored copy rather than the current page—or because the page itself is stale in a browser, proxy, or CDN cache. Start by opening the exact URL in a fresh private window. If that view is current but the screenshot is old, investigate the screenshot tool; if both are old, check browser and shared-cache layers.
Where can the old page be coming from?
“Cache” can refer to several independent layers. Clearing one does not clear the others, and an old screenshot alone does not identify which layer is responsible.
- Browser HTTP cache: The browser may reuse a stored response according to its freshness rules, or revalidate it with the server.
- Back/forward cache (bfcache): When you navigate with Back or Forward, the browser can restore a page snapshot without making a new network request. That is different from loading the URL afresh.
- Proxy, reverse proxy, or CDN: An intermediary may serve a stored copy to multiple visitors, independently of each visitor’s browser cache.
- Screenshot tool: A tool might reuse an earlier capture, or the screenshot may have been taken with a different URL, session, or personalized view. The tool is not identified here, so its refresh behavior cannot be assumed.
A search-engine cache is not the default explanation: the screenshot source matters, and the image may simply reflect one of the layers above.
How to find the stale layer
- Verify what the screenshot represents. Check the exact hostname, path, and query string. Determine whether it should show a logged-in or personalized page, and note when the capture was taken.
- Open the exact URL directly in a fresh private window. Compare its content with the screenshot. This helps separate a screenshot-only problem from a page that is stale in the browser or upstream.
- If the direct page is current but the screenshot is old, recapture it. Check the capture timestamp, URL, and session in the screenshot product, then use its refresh or recapture control if available. Those controls vary by product.
- If the browser page is stale too, test another browser or network. Also consider whether the old view appeared only after using Back or Forward; that points to a possible history snapshot rather than proving that an ordinary URL load used an old HTTP response.
- If several users or locations see the same outdated page, involve the site operator. Ask them to inspect the relevant proxy or CDN and the cache rules for that URL. Purging is appropriate only when the stale shared copy has been identified and the operator can manage it.
What browser reloads and cache headers can—and cannot—tell you
A reload that revalidates or bypasses local cached resources can help test for a browser-side cause, but browser and server behavior varies; no one shortcut guarantees that every resource was fetched anew. Clearing browser data likewise affects the local browser, not a screenshot service’s stored capture or a shared CDN copy.

When available, inspect the response’s Cache-Control and ETag headers. Cache-Control controls how caches store and reuse responses. A stale response may be revalidated using a validator such as ETag. MDN explains that “no-cache” generally calls for revalidation; it does not mean “never store.” no-store is the directive associated with not storing a response. These directives are not interchangeable, and their effect depends on the request and cache layer. See MDN’s Cache-Control reference and MDN’s HTTP caching guide.
Do not assume that adding a meta tag will universally fix HTTP caching. The response headers and the cache layer actually serving the content are the relevant evidence.

What site owners should check when a CDN copy is stale
If the direct page is outdated for multiple users, inspect the cache rule matching the affected URL and identify which layer is serving the copy before purging it. Cloudflare’s guide explains common CDN issues and purging cached page content: Cloudflare: Common CDN issues and how to fix them. A browser cache clear cannot purge a CDN.
Pay particular attention to dynamic or login-related pages. A cache rule that stores dynamic HTML can interfere with session behavior; Cloudflare documents a case in which a login response loses its session cookie. Does “no-cache” mean a browser cannot save the page?
No. In HTTP caching, “no-cache” generally means a stored response must be revalidated before reuse; “no-store” is the directive associated with not storing it.

Can I fix a CDN’s stale copy by clearing my browser cache?
No. Browser cache deletion affects your local browser, not an independently stored proxy or CDN copy.
