A PSD can look different after conversion to PNG when Photoshop changes its color profile, the export is resized or flattened, transparency is handled differently, or the PNG viewer interprets color differently. Before adjusting the artwork, compare the profile, dimensions, export options, and viewing app for both files.

Why can a PSD and its PNG look different?

A PSD stores editable image data and may include layers, effects, masks, and color-profile information. A PNG is a raster export, not an editable replacement for the PSD. During export, Photoshop can convert the image to another color space, change its pixel dimensions, resample it, or handle transparency and extra canvas area differently.

Color values alone do not fully describe how an image should look. An ICC profile tells color-management systems how to interpret and translate those values across applications and devices. Adobe notes that the same image can look different depending on where it is viewed: Color management in Photoshop on desktop.

Check color profiles first

Conversion and assignment are not the same

When you convert a document to a profile, Photoshop changes color values so the image is represented in the destination color space. Assigning a profile leaves the values unchanged but changes how Photoshop interprets them, which can substantially change their appearance. Avoid assigning a profile simply to make the PNG resemble the PSD; use the appropriate conversion when you need to target a color space. Adobe explains the distinction in Change color profiles in Photoshop.

For web output, use an intentional sRGB workflow

For images intended for online viewing, Adobe recommends converting an existing image to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 before saving to a web format. Its documented conversion workflow uses Adobe (ACE), Relative Colorimetric intent, and Black Point Compensation; review the conversion preview before applying it. See Manage document colors for online viewing in Photoshop on desktop.

In Photoshop’s Export As dialog, check whether Convert to sRGB is selected and whether Embed Color Profile is selected. Converting can change RGB numbers to preserve the intended appearance in the destination space. Embedding the profile gives compatible applications context for interpreting those numbers. If a profile is omitted or ignored, another viewer may display the same values differently. Adobe documents these controls in Export settings and preferences in Photoshop and explains profile embedding in Embed color profiles in Photoshop.

Out-of-gamut colors can shift

Color spaces have different gamuts: a color available in the source space may not be reproducible in the destination space. When converting, color management translates colors that fall outside the destination gamut, so some shifts can be expected. This is another reason to preview a conversion rather than assume the exported file will use identical RGB values.

Check whether the export changed size or canvas bounds

In Export As, compare the exported width and height with the PSD and inspect the scale and resampling settings. A different scale changes dimensions; resampling can change edge sharpness, fine detail, and tonal transitions. Also check whether the artwork is clipped by the export bounds or whether extra canvas area is included. Depending on the document and format settings, that area may appear as transparency, white, or an indexed-color swatch. The available controls are described in Adobe’s Photoshop export settings guide.

Check transparency and bit depth

Transparency can affect how an image appears when the viewer composites it over a background different from the one used in Photoshop. In Export As, check the transparency option and compare the PNG over a known background in a color-managed application. If the PNG differs only when viewed over a particular background, the issue may be compositing rather than changed artwork.

Photoshop’s current export guide, updated February 23, 2026, states that selecting Transparency generates 32-bit assets, selecting Smaller File generates 8-bit assets, and selecting neither generates 24-bit assets. Adobe’s format overview lists PNG as supporting 16-bit images but not among its 32-bit formats. If your PSD depends on a 32-bit workflow, verify that exporting to PNG suits the data you need to retain. See Export settings and preferences in Photoshop and Photoshop file formats overview.

Use this diagnostic sequence

  1. Compare the profiles. In Photoshop, check the PSD’s document profile in the document information area. Then inspect the exported PNG’s profile and whether it is tagged. Adobe explains how profile embedding helps other applications interpret colors consistently in Embed color profiles in Photoshop.
  2. Choose the intended color space. For web use, convert to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and review the preview, following Adobe’s online-viewing guidance.
  3. Review Export As color options. Check Convert to sRGB and Embed Color Profile so the export behavior matches your intent. The controls are covered in Adobe’s export settings guide.
  4. Compare dimensions and bounds. Verify width, height, scale, resampling, and canvas bounds; check for clipped artwork or unexpected extra canvas.
  5. Inspect transparency and file options. Check whether transparency and Smaller File are selected, then view the PNG over a known background.
  6. Compare in more than one viewer. Open the PNG and PSD in Photoshop and in another color-managed application. If they match in Photoshop but not elsewhere, profile handling, application interpretation, monitor calibration, or device characteristics may explain the difference.

Keep the PSD as your editable master

Save the PSD if you need to preserve layers, effects, and masks. PNG is useful as an exported raster image, but it does not preserve those editable document features. Adobe’s file-format overview describes PSD as the format to use when retaining them matters.
