A Brother printer normally enters Deep Sleep to reduce power use after it has spent time idle in Sleep Mode. The delay and available settings vary by model, and Deep Sleep itself cannot be disabled on some Brother printers.
What Deep Sleep means on a Brother printer
Deep Sleep is a lower-power state that follows Sleep Mode when the printer has been idle without receiving a job for a model- and settings-dependent period. Brother says Deep Sleep uses less power than Sleep Mode. It is generally normal power-saving behavior, not an indication of a fault. Brother’s guide to Deep Sleep Mode describes this behavior for the listed HL-L2400D-family models.
The exact time before the printer enters Deep Sleep, the panel indicator, and the available controls differ by model. There is no universal Brother timeout or default that applies across the product range.
Can you turn off Deep Sleep?
Not on every model. Brother says the Deep Sleep setting cannot be disabled for the HL-L2400D, HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW and related models listed in its guide. Its FAQ for the MFC-8510DN, MFC-8710DW, MFC-8810DW and MFC-8910DW likewise says Deep Sleep cannot be turned off, though Sleep Mode can be adjusted. Those statements apply to the named models, not all Brother printers.

Even if Deep Sleep itself has no off switch, some models let you change the preceding Sleep Time so the printer waits longer before entering Sleep Mode. Check the guide for your exact model before following a menu path.
How to change the settings: model-specific examples
MFC-L2710DW family: adjust Sleep Time on the printer
For the listed MFC-L2710DW-family models, Brother documents a maximum selectable idle delay of 50 minutes. The menu path depends on the panel:

- Non-touchscreen models: Menu > General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time.
- Touchscreen models: Settings > All Settings > General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time.
Enter the desired delay within the available range. These instructions are not universal to other Brother models. Brother’s MFC-L2710DW-family Sleep Time instructions list the applicable models and steps.
HL-L5450DN family: use the printer-driver Sleep Time option
Brother describes three driver choices for the listed HL-L5450DN-family printers: Auto (Intelligent Sleep Mode), Printer Default, or Manual. Manual lets you choose an idle delay. HL-L2365DW family: an example of a model-specific default
For the models listed in its FAQ, Brother gives a default Sleep Time of three minutes and says a print job wakes the machine. This is an example for those models only—not a general Brother default. Brother’s HL-L2365DW-family FAQ identifies the applicable models.
Deep Sleep is not the same as Auto Power Off
On some models, the printer can move from Deep Sleep into a separate Power Off Mode after another period of inactivity. That later stage may have its own setting, such as Auto Power Off under General Setup > Ecology > Auto Power Off. For the listed MFC-L2710DW-family models, Brother provides choices of Off or delays of one, two, four, or eight hours. How to wake a printer in Deep Sleep
Wake behavior depends on the model. Brother guides describe waking the printer with a print job or a control-panel button; an older MFC-8810DW-family FAQ also lists incoming fax reception, computer data, copying, or pressing a control-panel key. Check your printer’s own guide for its supported wake triggers and indicator behavior.
If the printer does not wake in the way its guide describes, the Deep Sleep label alone does not identify the cause. Brother’s model-specific documentation is the appropriate place to check next; the available guidance does not establish one universal firmware, network, or operating-system explanation for a failure to wake.

Find the right instructions for your printer
- Find the exact model number on the printer’s label or control-panel information screen.
- Open that model’s Brother online user guide or support FAQ.
- Look for Sleep Time, Deep Sleep, or Auto Power Off, and follow only the instructions that name your model.
- If the menus or behavior differ from the instructions, use the guide for your exact model and panel type rather than applying another printer’s settings.
