If the silence affects only one video or a specific segment—and especially if a creator sees a copyright notice—it may instead be a Content ID mute. The pattern helps distinguish a playback setting from an issue with a particular upload.
First, identify which kind of mute you are seeing
Notice whether sound disappears in one video, across YouTube, or in other apps too. That does not prove the cause, but it narrows where to start.
| What you notice | What it may indicate | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Sound is missing in many YouTube videos or other apps | Device, browser, or app volume and output settings may be involved. | Check system sound and browser or app volume, then restart and compare another supported browser or device. YouTube recommends checking sound settings and restarting. YouTube Help: How to fix no sound on YouTube; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot YouTube video errors. |
| Only one video or a particular segment is silent, and a creator sees a copyright notice | A Content ID claim may have muted claimed audio. | Open the copyright details in YouTube Studio and review the claimed material and available editing options. | A creator’s upload plays with sound on a computer but not on a mobile device | Poor stereo-to-mono compatibility is one possible upload issue. | Review the mix and mono compatibility in the source audio or editing workflow. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube. |
| The problem began alongside other browser or app playback errors | An extension, outdated browser or app, or playback state may be involved. | Update, restart, check extensions, and compare another supported setup. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot YouTube video errors. |
Check the player, app, and device
Try these checks in order. After each one, play the video again so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Check YouTube’s player volume. Make sure the player is not muted and raise its volume.
- Check browser or app volume. Confirm YouTube is not muted separately in your browser or app’s volume controls.
- Check device sound settings. Make sure the device volume is on. If your device offers more than one sound output, confirm it is using the output you intend.
- Restart the browser, app, or device. YouTube’s no-sound guidance specifically recommends turning on browser or device volume, checking device sound settings, and restarting the browser or device. See YouTube’s no-sound guidance.
If the sound keeps cutting out in a browser or app
If the basic sound checks do not help, treat the issue as a playback problem rather than assuming the video itself was muted.

- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
- Update your browser or YouTube app. YouTube includes updating the browser or app among its playback troubleshooting steps.
- Check browser extensions. An extension can affect playback. Try a private or incognito window with extensions disabled, or temporarily disable extensions and test again. If that changes the result, re-enable them individually to narrow down the conflict.
- Clear browser cache and cookies. This is another step in YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for playback errors.
- Compare another supported browser or device. If the sound works there, that narrows the problem to the original playback setup, but does not identify the exact setting or component at fault.

When a video has been muted for copyright
A copyright mute is different from a viewer’s sound setting. If a creator sees “Muted due to copyrighted content,” YouTube says the video has a Content ID claim. The creator can open the copyright details to identify the claimed material; a viewer should not assume this is the explanation for sound loss across videos without a video-specific clue.

Depending on the claim and the available options, a creator may be able to erase the song, mute all audio in the claimed segment, replace the song, or trim that segment. YouTube states that if all claimed audio can be muted, the copyright claim will be removed from the video. These are creator-side editing options, not fixes for a viewer’s device or browser.
See YouTube’s guidance on video removals and copyright notices and removing copyright-claimed content.

When a creator’s upload works on computer but not mobile
If an upload has sound on a computer but not on a mobile device, poor mono compatibility is one possible explanation. Stereo audio can change when converted to mono, and YouTube notes that this conversion may reduce audio quality or mute it. This specific upload-mixing issue does not explain every case of a viewer’s YouTube audio disappearing.
Review the mix and mono compatibility in the original audio or editing workflow. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting page describes this issue: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.

For creators: do not assume “free music” is copyright-safe
A music track described as free by a third-party website may still be flagged by Content ID. Check the track’s licence and usage terms before adding it to a video. YouTube recommends considering music from its Audio Library, original music, Creator Music where available, or properly licensed third-party tracks. See YouTube’s tips to find safe music.
