Some Android apps run poorly on Intel Chromebooks because they include native code built for ARM processors, while Intel Chromebooks use x86 processors. ChromeOS can translate ARM code on many supported devices, but Google says that translation can slow performance and increase battery use. Apps with native x86 or x86_64 builds can avoid that translation overhead.
That is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every slow app. Hardware requirements, limited device resources, poor laptop input or screen adaptation, and app or ChromeOS support changes can also cause trouble. The specific app and Chromebook model matter more than the processor brand alone.
How Intel and ARM app code can affect performance
Android phones commonly use ARM processors, while many Chromebooks use x86 processors. For basic apps written in Kotlin or Java, Google says the processor-architecture difference generally is not important. It can matter when an app uses native C or C++ libraries, including code used by some games and game engines.
If an app’s native code is built for ARM but the Chromebook has an x86 processor, ChromeOS may need to translate the code on compatible devices. Google’s Android Developers documentation says that “x86 Chromebooks try to translate ARM code whenever possible, but translation slows performance and increases battery usage.” A native build for x86 or x86_64 can run without that particular translation step. Android Developers explains the architecture and translation details.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Google does not publish a general slowdown figure for Intel Chromebooks. The effect depends on the Chromebook, app, app version, and what you experience—such as slow startup, lag, or higher battery use. Seeing an Intel processor alone does not establish that translation is the cause.
Why an app’s processor support matters
Android apps with native code may be packaged for one or more application binary interfaces (ABIs): armeabi-v7a for ARM32, arm64-v8a for ARM64, x86 for 32-bit x86, and x86_64 for 64-bit x86. Google recommends covering the relevant architectures, including x86 and x86_64, for the best ChromeOS experience. Android App Bundles let developers distribute architecture-specific versions without making every user download every variant. Google’s ChromeOS app-support guidance describes ABI coverage and app delivery.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Compatibility is not guaranteed just because the Chromebook has a 64-bit processor. Google notes that many older Chromebooks can run only 32-bit Android apps, and not every Android-capable Chromebook can translate ARM64 code. An ARM64-only app may therefore be unavailable on some devices rather than simply slow.
Other reasons an app may install poorly, feel awkward, or fail
Compatibility and required hardware
Google Play availability depends on more than CPU architecture. App compatibility filters can consider device attributes, screen size, Android version, location, and developer choices, and those conditions can change. Developers may also require hardware the Chromebook lacks; Google gives GPS as an example. If Play Store says “Your device is not compatible with this version,” check the app’s requirements and the Chromebook’s compatibility before treating Intel as the cause. See Google Play’s compatibility guidance and its Chromebook download troubleshooting page.

Laptop controls and layout
An app designed around a phone’s touch screen, portrait orientation, or small display may work but feel clumsy on a laptop. Touchscreen or stylus expectations, auto-rotation, window sizing, display resolution, keyboard, and mouse behavior can all affect the experience. Google recommends adapting apps for Chromebook form factors; its ChromeOS development guidance covers input and layout considerations.
Memory, storage, and connectivity
Apps vary in their memory, storage, and network demands. For managed school deployments, Google generally recommends Chromebooks with at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, while advising administrators to check each app’s requirements and test on representative devices. This is deployment guidance, not a universal threshold or a guarantee that an app will run smoothly. Google’s deployment guidelines provide the context.

ChromeOS and developer support
Not every Chromebook supports Android apps or the Play Store, and not every Android app works on every Chromebook. Check support for the exact model and keep ChromeOS current, as Google recommends for Android apps. Developers can also change or discontinue support. On eligible older Chromebooks, opting into extended updates removes Android apps and Google Play; details are in Google’s extended updates information. For general setup and model support, see Install and use Android apps on your Chromebook.
How to troubleshoot a slow or incompatible app
- Record the details. Note the Chromebook’s exact model and ChromeOS version, the app name and version, and the specific symptom: slow startup, lag, crashes, no install option, or controls that do not work.
- Confirm Android app support. Check that the Chromebook supports Android apps and that Google Play is enabled. Google notes that not all Chromebook models support Play Store apps and not all apps work on all Chromebooks. Use Google’s Chromebook app-support instructions.
- Check compatibility before installation troubleshooting. Review the Play Store result and the app developer’s support notes. If installation is blocked, consider required hardware, Android version, screen size, location, and developer restrictions. The compatibility guide and Chromebook download help explain common restrictions.
- Update ChromeOS and the app. Google recommends keeping ChromeOS up to date for Android apps. Then check whether the problem persists.
- If it installs but runs slowly, investigate native-code support. Games and apps with C/C++ libraries are more likely to be affected by architecture differences. Check whether the developer offers x86 or x86_64 builds. ARM-only native code makes translation overhead a plausible explanation on a compatible Intel Chromebook, but it does not prove that translation is the cause.
- Separate performance from usability. Check whether the complaint is actually about touch input, window size, orientation, keyboard or mouse controls, or display behavior. These issues can make an app feel poor even when it runs.
- For managed school fleets, test representative devices. Compare the app’s requirements with the actual Chromebook models and test on a small group before wider deployment. Administrators can also use Google’s Chromebook app testing guidance.
