Most pass through a detector without interacting. When one does interact, however, the charged particles and other signals it produces can be recorded and analyzed. Large detectors, long observation periods, and careful rejection of background events make those measurements useful—not a guarantee that every neutrino is caught.
Why neutrinos pass through matter
Many familiar particles interact electromagnetically: because they carry electric charge, they can scatter from charged particles in atoms and leave detectable effects. Neutrinos have no electric charge, so they do not produce that kind of ordinary electromagnetic trail. Their interactions with matter are governed primarily by the weak interaction, which makes an interaction unlikely over everyday distances.
That is why a neutrino can cross enormous amounts of material without colliding. Fermilab explains that an individual neutrino has an extremely low probability of interacting with matter; its public explanation notes that neutrinos can pass through thousands of miles of rock without interacting. Fermilab’s explanation of neutrinos describes this low probability, not an absolute inability to interact.
Neutrinos do not slip between atoms because they are too small, nor are they incapable of interacting. The key is probability: most neutrinos traveling through a given amount of matter leave no detectable event, while a small fraction do interact.

What a neutrino detector actually detects
A detector does not photograph or illuminate a neutrino as it passes. Instead, it records the products of an interaction. A neutrino interaction can create a charged lepton or other charged particles; those particles may leave tracks, produce light, or generate another measurable signal in the detector material.
The observable depends on the detector’s medium and design. Water and ice can reveal light produced by charged particles. Liquid argon can record ionization tracks, while other detector materials and methods can capture different signals, including scintillation or information from secondary neutrons. Fermilab’s overview of how neutrinos are detected describes indirect detection and examples of signals such as tracks, flashes of light, bubbles, or temperature changes.

Why detection can be reliable even when most neutrinos escape
“Reliable” does not mean that a detector catches every neutrino passing through it. It means an experiment can identify and analyze a subset of interaction events in its sensitive volume, then use that sample to study neutrino sources, energies, or behavior.
Experiments address the rarity of interactions by using substantial target volumes and collecting data over time. They also reconstruct candidate events and reject backgrounds: unrelated particles or detector effects that could obscure or imitate a neutrino interaction. How well a result answers a particular question depends on the detector’s exposure, energy range, background handling, event reconstruction, and stated uncertainties. A detector’s usefulness therefore depends on its scientific purpose and event regime; there is no single detection-efficiency figure that applies to all neutrinos and experiments.

How detector designs differ
Neutrino observatories use different materials and geometries because they pursue different sources, energies, and measurements. These examples illustrate the range of approaches; they do not establish a universal ranking of detector performance.
| Example | Medium and scale | What it helps measure |
|---|---|---|
| IceCube | Instrumented Antarctic ice; NASA describes it as about 0.6 miles on each side and roughly one cubic kilometer in volume. | A large observatory for neutrino studies. Its scale provides a substantial volume in which rare interactions can produce observable signals. |
| ANNIE | Fermilab describes ANNIE as a 26-ton water-based detector on the Booster Neutrino Beam. | Studies neutron production in neutrino–nucleus interactions; neutron information can help distinguish signal from background. |
| SBND | A liquid-argon detector in Fermilab’s Short-Baseline Neutrino Program; the cited report does not state its mass or volume. | Records signatures from charged particles produced when neutrinos interact with argon nuclei, allowing researchers to reconstruct interactions. |
| DUNE technology | Fermilab’s neutrino overview identifies liquid-argon detectors among technologies used in the broader neutrino program; the cited overview does not state a comparable scale here. | Illustrates how detector technology is selected to suit an experiment’s scientific goals. |
NASA’s IceCube description gives the observatory’s approximate dimensions. Fermilab provides details about ANNIE and its broader neutrino program. Its report on SBND’s first identified neutrino interactions describes detection through the products of neutrino–argon interactions, not capture of every neutrino passing by.

What current results can—and cannot—show
Neutrinos can cross the Earth almost unhindered, but their behavior and the rare interactions they produce can still reveal information about matter on the way. In an August 11, 2026 article, the IceCube collaboration described a study using simulated atmospheric-neutrino oscillations in Earth matter to project what the IceCube Upgrade might measure. The projections explore whether the experiment could test a uniform Earth-density profile against a layered one and estimate properties such as mass and layer density. They are projected capabilities, not a completed measurement of Earth’s interior. See IceCube’s description of the projected study.
