Quiet, distorted, or one-sided sound does not automatically mean your wired headphones are broken. A loose plug, muted or imbalanced setting, faulty extension or inline remote, dirty connection, app, or playback device can produce similar symptoms. Check the signal path in order, then cross-test the headphones and device to see where the fault follows.
Start with the connection and basic controls
- Seat the plug fully. Push it firmly into the headphone output. Make sure you are using an audio output, not a microphone input or another jack. On a phone or tablet, briefly remove a case if it may prevent the plug from seating completely. Sony, Apple, and Microsoft all recommend checking the connection. Sony support, Apple Support, and Microsoft Support provide device-specific guidance.
- Check volume and mute. Raise the playback device’s volume modestly, confirm it is not muted, and check any volume control on the headphone cable. If you are using a computer, confirm that the intended output device is selected.
- Check left-right balance. In your device’s sound settings, make sure the balance control is centered. If one side is very quiet or silent, also confirm the source is outputting stereo rather than mono.
- Try another app, track, or audio source. A problem limited to one recording or app may not be a headphone fault. Test again after each change so you know which check affected the sound.
Isolate extensions, remotes, and connections
If the headphones are connected through an extension cable, adapter, or inline remote, disconnect that accessory temporarily and connect the headphones directly to the output if possible. Compare the sound with and without it. A change can point to an intermediary in the signal path, though it does not by itself prove which part is defective.
Inspect the plug and cable for visible damage, and look for debris on accessible connector surfaces or around the device opening. Apple recommends gently brushing device openings with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Follow the device maker’s cleaning instructions; do not insert metal objects or apply liquids inside a jack.
Use cross-tests to find where the fault follows
Two comparisons are especially useful: try the headphones on another playback device, then try a known-working pair of headphones on the original device. Also compare a direct connection with any extension or remote removed, and compare more than one app or recording.

| The same headphones are quiet, distorted, or one-sided on another device. | The headphones or their cable are more likely to be involved. | Check the plug and cable for damage. If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer or consider replacement; Sony advises replacement when the issue persists on another player. Sony support |
| More than one known-working headphone pair has the same problem on the original device. | The source device, its output, or its settings may be involved. | Recheck output selection, volume, balance, connection, and relevant device troubleshooting guidance. |
| The sound changes when an extension or inline remote is removed. | An accessory or connection in that path may be involved. | Test without the accessory and inspect its connectors for visible damage. |
| Only one app, track, or recording sounds wrong. | The issue may be specific to that media or app rather than the headphones. | Compare another source before changing hardware. |
These comparisons narrow down the likely location; they do not identify a specific internal defect. Without the headphone and playback-device models, there is no basis to name a particular impedance, adapter, amplifier, or other compatibility issue as the cause.
Windows checks for quiet or missing headphone audio
In Windows 10 or Windows 11, confirm that the headphones are connected to the correct audio jack and that Windows is using the intended output device. Check Windows volume and mute, as well as any app or inline volume control. If the problem started with an audio effect or enhancement, try turning enhancements off; Microsoft notes that they can cause audio problems on some systems. Menu names and paths vary by Windows version, so follow Microsoft’s current Windows sound troubleshooting guidance for your version.

What to do if raising the volume causes distortion
Turn the volume down rather than pushing it higher to compensate. Sony’s wired-headphone guidance notes that some connected devices may distort, clip, or make noise at high volume: “In that case, lower the volume.” Sony Japan support also cautions against prolonged listening at excessively high levels. After reducing the volume, compare another recording, device, or headphone pair to isolate the source of the distortion.

Read the symptom as a starting clue, not a diagnosis
- Both sides are quiet: Check source and inline volume, mute, output selection, plug seating, and another app or source.
- One side is quiet or silent: Check plug seating, balance, stereo output, and any extension or adapter path; then cross-test on another device.
- Sound is muffled, crackling, or intermittent: Check the connection and cable, inspect accessible surfaces, remove intermediary accessories, and compare another source or device.
- Distortion increases with volume: Reduce volume and compare another source or headphone pair rather than treating maximum volume as a fix.
