The same Bluetooth headphones can sound very different on two devices because each source may select a different playback profile, audio output, codec, or sound-processing setting. If audio turns thin or phone-call-like when you join a call or start voice chat, the affected device may be switching the headset to a microphone-capable Bluetooth mode. Other causes include the wrong output being selected, app or system settings, connection problems, or a fault that needs further testing.
Start by identifying when and how the sound changes
The timing and type of the problem are useful clues. Note whether the audio is consistently muffled, degrades only when a microphone is active, crackles or drops out, is unusually quiet, or has only one working channel. The title alone does not identify which cause applies.
- Phone-call-like sound during calls or voice chat: Check microphone selection and Bluetooth audio mode first.
- Poor sound all the time on just one source: Check its output selection, app and system settings, and Bluetooth connection.
- Crackling or dropouts: Compare streaming with locally stored audio and check whether connection conditions change the problem.
- One missing channel: Check balance, mono audio, pairing, and updates on the affected device.
Change one setting at a time where possible. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment, if any, changes the sound.
Why microphone use can make Bluetooth audio sound worse
On Windows Bluetooth Classic, Microsoft documents two relevant profiles: A2DP supports stereo playback, while HFP supports mono playback and microphone capture. When an app uses a Bluetooth headset’s microphone, the connection may use the hands-free profile, making playback sound narrower or more like a phone call. Microsoft also notes that Windows may resample audio when apps use different endpoints. This is a likely explanation for a change that begins with a call, meeting, game chat, or voice app—not a diagnosis for every device or operating system. Check the app’s microphone and Windows playback output
- In the calling, meeting, or game app, inspect its audio settings and note which microphone is selected.
- In Windows sound settings, confirm that playback is going to the headphones’ stereo output rather than another device or a hands-free endpoint, if separate endpoints are shown.
- If the headset microphone is selected and audio becomes call-like, test with a separate microphone while leaving the headphones selected for stereo playback.
Using a separate microphone is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix: changing input devices can affect calling or voice-chat functionality. Available endpoint names and controls vary with Windows version, headset, and Bluetooth stack. Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth sound troubleshooting is a useful next step if the intended output is unclear.
Check profile choices without disabling useful features blindly
Some devices expose profile choices; many do not. Sony recommends switching music playback from HFP or HSP to A2DP when the connected device offers that control. The menu and available options depend on the source. Disabling a hands-free service may remove headset microphone or calling capability, so do not treat it as a general-purpose setting to turn off. Sony’s low Bluetooth sound-quality guidance describes this profile check.

Consider LE Audio only if both devices support it
On some Windows 11 setups, Bluetooth LE Audio can improve playback quality while the microphone is in use. This depends on compatible LE Audio hardware in both the PC and headphones; it is not a universal switch for Bluetooth headsets. - MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
- Verify the output. Confirm the affected device is playing through the headphones, not its own speakers or another audio device.
- Reconnect. Disconnect and reconnect the headphones. If that does not help, remove or forget the pairing and pair again using the device maker’s instructions.
- Compare the same content. Play the same audio on the known-good device. Then try another Bluetooth headset on the affected source. If only the original headphones sound bad across sources, that points toward the headphones; if multiple headsets have trouble on one source, focus on that source. These comparisons help locate the problem but do not by themselves prove a hardware fault. Samsung recommends cross-device checks in its Galaxy Bluetooth headphone troubleshooting.
- Review sound settings. Check app equalizers, sound enhancements, accessibility balance or mono settings, and any audio-quality options in the app or operating system.
- Check updates if the issue began recently. Review relevant device drivers, operating-system updates, and headphone firmware. Microsoft’s Bluetooth sound troubleshooting covers Windows checks.
If audio crackles, cuts out, or distorts intermittently
First compare streaming audio with a locally stored track. If local playback is clean but streaming is not, the issue may be in the app or its connection rather than the headphones’ basic playback. Next, see whether moving closer to the source or changing the surrounding connection conditions changes the symptom. Apple’s wireless-headphone guidance for cutouts or distortion covers source and connection checks; Sony also recommends checking app and connection behavior in its skipping or noise troubleshooting.
If only one channel works
On Windows, check left/right balance and whether mono audio is enabled. Also verify the selected output format and pairing, and consider whether the problem began after a software or firmware update. Microsoft lists these as relevant checks in its Bluetooth one-channel audio troubleshooting. If stereo works on another source, that comparison helps narrow the issue to the affected device or its settings.

When to inspect the headphones
If the same poor sound follows the headphones across multiple sources, inspect the earpieces for debris or visible damage and consult the headphone maker’s support. Samsung notes that debris, damage, and some downloaded apps can contribute to sound problems. Avoid assuming replacement is necessary until source settings, connection, and cross-device comparisons have been checked.
Do codecs explain the difference?
They can contribute, but a codec is useful only when both the source and headphones support it and the connection actually uses it. Codec support and selection controls vary by device and operating system, so enabling a named codec such as AAC, aptX, or LDAC is not a guaranteed fix. Check the manuals or support pages for both endpoints before changing codec settings.
