DNA data storage is not yet a practical replacement for tape because the promise of tiny, long-lived molecular archives does not solve the everyday requirements of an archive: affordable writing, timely retrieval, reliable file management, and integration with storage operations. DNA has an extraordinary potential density, but writing requires DNA synthesis and reading requires sequencing. Those steps remain costly and slow compared with the mature tape workflow described in the IEEE’s 2023 storage roadmap.
How DNA storage works—and why it is aimed at archives
DNA storage maps digital data to sequences of DNA bases. To write data, a system encodes bits, synthesizes the corresponding DNA, and preserves it. To retrieve data, it locates the relevant material, sequences the DNA, and decodes the result with error correction. The UK government’s explanation of the process notes that read latency makes the technology more suited to archival data than to information people need to access quickly.
That architecture matters: DNA is not a tape cartridge that can simply be mounted and streamed. Its physical compactness is a property of the storage medium, while a working archive also needs synthesis and sequencing equipment, preservation, indexing, error correction, automation, and a process for returning usable files.
Where DNA and tape differ in practice
| Consideration | DNA storage | Magnetic tape |
|---|---|---|
| Write performance | The 2023 IEEE roadmap lists minutes to hours of write latency and about 100 MB per day. These are roadmap comparison figures, not universal measurements of every system. | The same roadmap lists seconds to minutes of write latency and approximately 400 MB/s uncompressed. These are roadmap comparison figures, not a guarantee for every tape product or operating condition. |
| Retrieval | Data must be sequenced and decoded; read latency is one reason the UK government describes DNA as an archival option. | Tape supports established archive workflows, though locating and mounting a cartridge is part of the operational process. |
| Cost evidence | The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 2022 review cited about $3,500 per megabyte for synthetic DNA storage. A National Academies consultation published in 2023 records a 2022 presentation citing synthesis above $100,000 per GB and sequencing above $500 per GB. These are dated historical figures, not current retail quotations. | The cited sources do not provide a directly comparable current cost per stored or retrieved GB for tape. |
| Density | Microsoft Research describes potential density of up to about one exabyte per cubic millimeter. This is a medium-level potential, not demonstrated commercial archive capacity after system overhead. | The cited sources do not provide a directly comparable tape capacity-per-volume figure. |
| Retention and upkeep | DNA may retain information for very long periods under suitable preservation conditions, but keeping it interpretable and readable depends on the complete system. | The UK government annex estimates archival tape degrades after 10 to 15 years and must be migrated; this is a general estimate, not a universal lifespan for every tape or storage condition. |
Why density and longevity do not settle the comparison
Potential density is not usable archive capacity
DNA’s compactness could reduce the physical volume occupied by the medium. But a practical comparison must include coding overhead, error correction, storage and preservation materials, and the equipment and processes used to write and read data. Microsoft Research’s “up to about one exabyte per cubic millimeter” figure describes potential density; it should not be read as the capacity of a purchasable archive system.

Long retention still depends on preservation and readability
The GAO describes the potential for DNA data to last thousands of years under very low-temperature conditions. Microsoft Research also discusses DNA’s half-life. Neither claim guarantees the useful lifetime of a commercial archive: preservation conditions, future ability to sequence the material, error correction, and access to the decoding process all matter. Tape also requires stewardship; the UK government’s 10-to-15-year degradation estimate implies migration rather than indefinite unattended storage.
Costs and throughput remain major barriers
The available published cost figures are historical, but they illustrate why synthesis and sequencing have been central obstacles. In its 2022 review, the U.S. Government Accountability Office put synthetic DNA storage at about $3,500 per megabyte. A National Academies consultation records David Markowitz of IARPA citing, at SC22 in 2022, synthesis costs above $100,000 per GB and sequencing above $500 per GB. The same account said the largest published archive at that time was 200 MB and required nine synthesis runs. These figures reflect those sources and dates, not a current quote or a stable price for all systems.

Throughput is another mismatch. The IEEE’s 2023 roadmap compares DNA storage at roughly 100 MB per day with tape at approximately 400 MB/s uncompressed. It also lists DNA write latency as minutes to hours and tape as seconds to minutes. These are roadmap-level comparisons, not a universal benchmark, but they show why high density alone does not make DNA suitable for routinely ingesting or restoring large archives.

CRISPR DNA tape experiment
A 2023 Nature Communications proof of concept wrote and recovered 1,250 bits on DNA tape with 100% accuracy in that experiment. This demonstrates a research result at a small scale; it does not establish petabyte-scale operation, commercial reliability, or the performance of a production archive.

Cassette-form-factor prototype
A 2025 Science Advances cassette prototype demonstrated barcode-based addressing, multiple file operations, and automated operations in a compact drive concept. Its authors also state that existing DNA storage devices have not yet achieved robust data management comparable to commercial storage systems. That gap includes operational capabilities such as reliable indexing, repeated access, error handling, and integration with established archive infrastructure.
Programs and milestones are not proof of delivery
The National Academies consultation describes IARPA’s MIST goal for 2025: a 1 TB system at $1/GB with end-to-end tabletop workflows. It also assigns DNA storage a technology readiness level of 4, based on component validation in a laboratory environment. A stated program goal is not evidence the target was achieved; the consultation does not establish whether that particular milestone was met.

What would have to change for DNA to replace tape?
A replacement must work as a complete archive, not merely demonstrate that bits can be encoded in DNA. The decision depends on whether systems can deliver:
- Economical writing and reading: synthesis and sequencing costs must fall enough for the data volumes and retrieval patterns an archive actually serves.
- Useful service times: ingest and retrieval must meet the archive’s requirements, including the time to identify, sequence, decode, and return requested files.
- Dependable data management: indexing, file addressing, error correction, repeated access, and recovery need to work together reliably.
- Preservation that can be operated: retention conditions must be achievable, and the archive must remain interpretable and readable across its intended life.
- Integration with existing infrastructure: automation and interfaces must fit the workflows and operational expectations of real storage facilities.
Microsoft Research’s project page captures the current distinction between promise and practicality: “While this is not practical yet due to the current state of DNA synthesis and sequencing, these technologies are improving quite rapidly with advances in the biotech industry.” The page identifies the project as established in January 2015. Faster progress in biotechnology may improve the outlook, but it does not by itself establish a mature replacement system.
