Their light blends into one unresolved source; the cluster itself remains a group of separate stars. Distance, crowding, and image resolution all affect what a telescope can show.
What “point of light” means in an image
A star cluster is a group of stars, not a single star. When several members fall within the same resolution element—the smallest angular detail an observing system can distinguish—their overlapping light may be recorded or displayed as one source. “Point-like” describes how the cluster appears at that image’s scale and resolution, not what it is physically.
Nor is an optical point source a mathematical point: diffraction and the rest of the observing and imaging system give it a finite image. A larger aperture can produce a smaller diffraction pattern and better angular resolution under diffraction-limited conditions, but the result also depends on image quality and sampling.
Why distance and crowding make stars blend together
Distance shrinks the cluster’s apparent size
As a cluster gets farther away, its physical size covers a smaller angle on the sky. Its stars therefore appear closer together in the image, making them harder to separate. There is no single distance at which all clusters become point-like: physical size, member spacing, brightness, and imaging conditions differ.

Dense centers can be hard to resolve even when a telescope is powerful
Distance is not the only cause. Globular clusters contain thousands to millions of stars, according to NASA’s overview of star clusters (page accessed 2026). Their centers can be so crowded that individual stars are difficult to discern even with powerful telescopes. By contrast, the stars in a sparse open cluster may be visible separately through a telescope, and sometimes to the unaided eye.
A nearby dense core can thus remain unresolved, while a more distant, sparse group may show distinct stars if their apparent separations and the image resolution allow it.

One example: NASA’s M14 ground-and-Hubble comparison
NASA’s 1990 comparison of globular cluster M14 shows how much the image resolution can change the appearance. M14 is listed as 70,000 light-years away. In a ground-based Cerro Tololo image of the region, with a reported resolution of 1.5 arcseconds, many sources appear single. In the Hubble Faint Object Camera image, NASA reports stellar diameters of 0.08 arcsecond and shows many faint objects that appeared single from the ground. See NASA’s M14 image description.
Those figures describe this historical comparison; they are not universal resolution limits or a general distance threshold. They illustrate that finer angular detail can separate stars whose images previously blended together.

How the same effect appears in other clusters
A 1994 study of three super-star clusters reported half-light radii of 2.2–3.4 parsecs. The clusters appeared as point sources in ground-based images but were partially resolved by Hubble, according to the NASA Technical Reports Server record for the paper. This is another example of appearance depending on the imaging system, rather than proof that the clusters were single stars.
Omega Centauri demonstrates how crowding can matter within one cluster. In a 2018 image description, NASA Goddard estimates nearly 10 million stars and a distance of about 16,000 light-years; it reports an average separation of about one-third of a light-year in the crowded core. These are estimates given in NASA Goddard’s Omega Centauri description, not a universal spacing for globular clusters.

What determines whether a cluster resolves into stars?
- Angular size and member spacing: Greater distance reduces apparent size, while a cluster’s physical density determines how closely its stars are packed.
- Telescope and imaging resolution: Better angular resolution can distinguish closer apparent separations. The optics explainer from Sky & Telescope describes how aperture and diffraction affect resolution.
- Brightness and image quality: Faint members can disappear into brighter light, and the recorded result also depends on observing and image-sampling conditions.
These factors work together. A point-like patch in one telescope image may reveal numerous members in a sharper image, while a crowded core may remain difficult to pick apart. The appearance alone does not tell you that the cluster is one star.

Here, “star cluster” means a stellar group such as an open, globular, or embedded cluster—not a galaxy cluster, which is a collection of galaxies. NASA’s cluster overview describes these different types of star cluster.
