If Discord works in its desktop app but not in Chrome, that narrows the problem to investigate but does not identify one cause. Chrome may have different browser permissions, stored site data, proxy settings, or network handling. First determine whether Discord will not load or sign in, whether images or other assets are missing, or whether only voice and video fail; each symptom calls for different checks.
Identify what is failing in Chrome
Separate a page or sign-in problem from a feature problem. Discord’s browser-specific troubleshooting guidance covers audio, voice, video, and device permissions; those steps will not fix a page that never loads.
- Discord will not load or sign in: note whether the page is blank, stuck, or shows an error.
- The app loads but images or other assets are missing: record what fails and any error message.
- The app loads, but voice or video fails: check browser compatibility, device permissions, and Discord’s voice settings.
A working desktop client is a comparison, not proof that Chrome uses the same settings or network route. Chromium’s documentation explains that proxy configuration can affect routing, name resolution, and which traffic passes through a proxy: Proxy support in Chromium.
Check service status and basic connectivity
Before changing Chrome settings, check Discord’s Status page and confirm that your internet connection is working. If possible, try a different network. These general checks help distinguish a wider service or connection issue from a problem isolated to Chrome, but a working desktop app does not guarantee that every browser feature or route is healthy.

Discord’s Troubleshooting Guide also recommends restarting Discord and updating the client. These are general troubleshooting steps; they do not establish why Chrome is failing.
If Discord loads but voice or video does not
- Confirm that your browser and browser version are compatible with Discord’s web features. Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide addresses browser compatibility and media issues.
- In Chrome, allow microphone and camera access for Discord. Check Chrome’s site permissions for the Discord page and make sure neither device is blocked.
- In Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video. Review the input mode, selected input and output devices, and input/output levels.
- If the settings still appear wrong, use the documented reset controls in Voice & Video settings, then test again.
These checks apply when the web app loads and the failure is with media. They are not a general remedy for a blank page, failed sign-in, or missing assets.

If the page, connection, or assets fail
Use the displayed error to choose a check rather than changing settings at random. Discord’s Troubleshooting Console Log Errors covers proxy and connection errors, including ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED and reset, timeout, closed-connection, and name-not-resolved errors.
- Proxy-related error: inspect whether a proxy is configured in Chrome or your system. Discord’s error guide says its service does not work with proxies and advises disabling them in this context. Only change a proxy if one is configured and doing so is appropriate for your network.
- Connection or name-resolution error: follow Discord’s connection-error guidance, which includes renewing DNS and IP settings. The specific steps depend on your operating system.
- Missing images or other assets: try clearing Chrome’s cache and cookies, then check whether firewall or antivirus software is blocking Discord. Discord presents these as checks for asset-loading errors, not as a reason to turn off security protection broadly.
Proxy settings can change how Chrome routes requests and where name resolution occurs, so a proxy is worth checking when the error fits. That possibility does not prove a proxy is the cause in an individual case.

When the problem persists
Gather the details that distinguish a Chrome-specific fault from a Discord or network issue before contacting Discord Support. Its general guide recommends documenting reproduction steps and screenshots or recordings; its voice and video guide asks for browser and version, affected client, settings, and device details.
- Exact error message, or a description of what fails if there is no message
- Steps that reliably reproduce the problem
- Operating system and Chrome version
- Whether the desktop app, Chrome, or another browser is affected
- Relevant settings and device details; include screenshots where useful
Discord’s 2020 article Why Discord Still Maintains a Browser-Only Experience described browser access as an intended way to use Discord. Because that article dates to June 9, 2020, it should not be read as a current, version-specific compatibility guarantee.
