A false online listing advertised a Macnas Halloween Parade, drawing a large crowd to central Dublin before An Garda Síochána publicly corrected the claim and asked people to disperse safely. Reporting describes AI-assisted text as one part of a broader online campaign—not as proof that AI alone caused the gathering.
Was there a Halloween parade in Dublin?
No. The Independent reported that no parade was planned for Dublin in 2024. The false listing advertised a Macnas Halloween Parade from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a route described as running from Parnell Street to Christchurch Cathedral. On October 31, people gathered along O’Connell Street expecting the event, but it never took place. The Independent’s November 1 report described the crowd as thousands, but did not provide a counting method or precise attendance figure.
What did Gardaí tell the crowd?
An Garda Síochána issued a public notice saying: “Please be advised that contrary to information being circulated online, no Halloween parade is scheduled to take place in Dublin city centre this evening or tonight.” The notice also asked: “All those gathered on O’Connell Street in expectation of such a parade” to “disperse safely.” The statement was reproduced by The Independent and Today FM; neither report names a spokesperson.
Today FM reported that Gardaí asked the crowd to move on and that Luas services were disrupted for a time. The report does not quantify the disruption. Today FM’s November 1 coverage also included comments from Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon about misinformation and public interest in a city parade.

How did the fake parade listing spread?
The false event listing appeared on the My Spirit Halloween website. The Independent reported that it gained visibility in Google results. Futurism, citing Ciarán O’Connor, a researcher and investigator at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, described a wider online effort involving fake Facebook pages and photographs from previous Macnas parades, alongside text on the website that had been produced with AI assistance. Futurism’s November 2 account reported that the site operator said at least 30 percent of the site’s content had been made with AI assistance. That is a claim relayed by O’Connor and Futurism, not an independently audited measurement.
The accounts point to several ways the false claim could reach people: a published event listing, search visibility, social sharing, and familiar images from earlier parades. They do not establish that AI independently created the hoax or caused people to gather. AI-assisted writing was described as one component of the campaign, alongside the site and its distribution.

What is known—and what remains uncertain?
- Established: The parade was not scheduled, the false listing advertised it, a crowd gathered on O’Connell Street, and Gardaí issued a correction and dispersal request.
- Reported with attribution: Futurism relayed O’Connor’s account of fake Facebook pages, old parade imagery, AI-assisted website text, and the operator’s claim about the proportion of AI-assisted content.
- Not established by the available reporting: A precise crowd count, the website operator’s identity or location, and the operator’s motive. Futurism reported O’Connor’s assessment that those behind the site appeared to be based in Pakistan despite a claimed Illinois location, but the reports do not independently confirm who operated it or where they were based. Today FM described an ad-revenue scam explanation as a belief; it is not a proven motive.
How to check a claimed public event
This episode shows why a polished listing or a familiar image is not enough to confirm that a public event is happening. For an event with crowd or transport implications, compare the listing with direct notices from the relevant organizer and local authorities, and look for contemporaneous reporting that identifies its sources. In this case, the Garda notice directly answered whether a parade was scheduled; claims about how the website was operated came through investigative reporting and should be treated with that attribution.
